Hey guys!
I never post here. :ouch: Mainly because I know dick about nutrition and I'm intimidated by all you smart bastards. That being said, maybe you guys can help me help somebody else.

One of my older buddies is considering taking testosterone-OH (he's turning 45 this year and is having a hard time getting back in shape). He read some shit in IronMan magazine that was extolling the virtues of this wonderful product. It sounds very "American" to me, ie: "Hell yeah, I can take a pill that will make me want to work out!"

Apparently it gives all the benefits of Testosterone without the negative side effects (growing bitch tits, gaining weight, etc.)... the thing is, it sounded like someone got paid to say good shit about the product in a magazine to me and I'm wondering if there may be some negative things about it that you guys know of but wasn't necessarily mentioned in the article.

Any thoughts?

anyway your friend should read and learn a lot about steroids before he bothers using them. Have him hang out on some steroid boards, he'll pick it up.

Don't. It is a waste of money.

Eat more meat, Lift weights, take cod liver oil, have more sex. Additionally, tell him to add more concentrated sources of antioxidants into his diet: Deep red wines, tea and organic coffee, richly colored fruits and veggies. This is a natural, healthy way to effectively boost testosterone and get in shape.

I like this suggestion. I will definitely pass it on... I'm very hesitant about fucking with the natural chemistry of your body.

But his perspective is that, because he has slacked off the last couple of years and he is at an age where the body naturally slows production of testosterone, he thinks that the boost would allow him to get back to a level where he could maintain his fitness again. Mainly because he has already been working out and eating better but hasn't seen significant results so he's losing motivation.

Tell him to hold off and read Anabolics 2007 or something.

What's he trying to achieve exactly anyway?

His testosterone levels won't be at such a level so as to hinder gains significantly. There are alot of people aged +40 that have no problems getting fit and staying fit. What he needs is to sort out the essentials first; Training, nutrition and discipline. Does he know what his goals are? Weight gain/loss? Maintenance? Strength development?

Another thing he should bear in mind is to not go out 110%. Progression is important. Start off lightly and then successively add more intensity and volume for every week.

I still stand by the fact that there are no legal testo-supplements that give any significant results. Put him on some creatine concoction and I reckon he'll get a viable boost. This is of course if he wants to stay legal.

What Kitosho said also applies.

I do not know what that is. :agony:

He's always been an active guy, mountain biking, road biking, weight lifting etc. So, for the majority of his life, just by doing the activities that he enjoys and is good at, he's been able to stay fit. But, with the onset of age and because he's been slacking off with exercising and drinking beer instead for the last few years, he's managed to get himself about 50lbs overweight. He wants to get back down to below 200lbs, look good and feel strong again.

Ha ha, the formula for anyone at any age that wants to lose weight and get strong is simple.

Eat less, exercise more and drink water instead of beer.

He and I both know this, but it's been hard for him to stay on track (he had a fitness trainer that ran him through "12 weeks of pain" and went gangbusters for about 6 weeks and then fell off). He does know what his goals are and is pretty well versed in nutrition and hasn't ever considered "cheating" before.

I think, because the article was pitching that "When you get over a certain age your body starts working against you and it's not your fault that you are lazy... you need this pill!" BS and he gobbled it up. I'm simply trying to give him the flip side of this "wonder pill" with no negative side effects.

So far, it seems like the only benefit that could come is a placebo effect working to mentally motivate him to stay on track... which may be all that it takes to get back in shape. Still, I don't want him jacking himself up with testosterone and then ending up having to look at his man boobs everyday.

Assuming Testosterone OH is actually testosterone, any form of synthetic testosterone, whether anabolic steroids or not would cause your body to eventually get the required protein that your testes make naturally from these synthetic testosterones. In a nutshell, what this means is that Testosterone OH, if it really is synthetic testosterone, will cause your buddy's balls to shrivel up to the point where he can say goodbye to the rest of his sex life after prolonged use.

The only exogeneous hormonal modifiers that will work are

1. STEROIDS
2. PROHORMONES

These are both illegal. Whatever he's buying is probably a crappy, overpriced plant sterol or something.

No, it is a prohormone (4-hydroxytestosterone), I think. I don't know anything about it though. Also, if he's 50lbs overweight and isn't able to shift it, then he's doing something wrong, and anabolics are hardly going to help with that until he gets his shit together.

most (common) prohormones don't work anyway.
