so for the past month or 2 i've started using kettlebells and completely stopped doing conventional weight-training.

is this ok..? or is it ideal to alternate between the 2.

thanks

kettlebells won't give you bulk. they are EXTREMELY helpful though.

Yeah explain to me how the fuck you are going to bulk up with those things. Explain how it just "replaces" weight training. The highest weight i've ever heard of is 106 lbs. I see it as a good way of supplementing.

:EDIT: and of course the shit has a ton of versatility. I fail to see it replacing weight training.

i'd have to agree. it's conditioned me really well but i haven't noticed any increase in size.

where do you get kettlebells from? did you buy them or go to a gym that has them?

they look really fun but i don't know how to get access to them without spending a considerable sum of money

Well whenever you order a weight set its going to cost more for the shipping so thats why its gonna cost a shitload. See if a sporting goods store has them

i'm in Australia so i bought them online at

http://www.kettlebells.com.au/

started off with a 16kg

then they got upgraded stock so they were having a buy 1 get 1 free of the old stock, so i snatched 2 28kgs

What were you doing weight training for previously?

Vik

pretty much just making my muscles fuller, if that makes sense.

and conditioning myself for capoeira + tricking.

i'm pretty heavy on working my abs. i want big abs.

You're right though that kettlebells are piece of shit marketing gimmicks. Out of the hundreds of exercises that you can do with them, there are maybe a half dozen exercises (if that) that are actually better with them than dumbbells and none of those exercises are essential in any way to a weight-training routine.

Well in my opinion for tricking, kettlebells would be perfect, as they can be used to train flexibility, your tendons, and other shit. They would DEFINITELY help out with capoeira more than lifting would. If you had enough time, train with both, but with the resources kettlebells might help more.

And as you probably already know there are ab exercises you can do with kettlebells.

Of course of course, if you were to google "kettlebell" most of those sites make terribly false claims about Russian weightlifters and the workouts themselves being used to make you "big" and whatnot.

But if you were to use kettlebells for just unilateral exercise, you might as well just use regular weights. No point in wasting a ton of time and money to find a supplier near you to get them cheap, or getting them delivered for a shitload of cash, amirite?

I mean just remember that it can't replace regular weight training, but I still think that it would help more for capoeira and shit than weight training.

Yes. Exactly.

I was merely pointing out how you would, in fact, go about "getting big" using kettlebells.

I was about to burst into a fit of rage before I read Chicanerous's posts.

Thankyou Chic, for making this thread somewhat bearable.

So?

There's a million different reasons you could not be noticing any increase in size.

It seems now that the reason you see no increase in size is because you lack the understanding of weight training in relation to hypertrophy, because then you would know that lifting a different type of object wouldn't magically alter the effects of your workout routine.
And probably a million other reasons.

well i do different drills with kettlebells then dumbells/barbells.

with the kettlebells its swings, cleans and snatches which involve the whole body as opposed to isolating muscle groups.

i've put on about 7kg since i started. While i haven't noticed so much of a "size" increase, all my muscles feel a lot thicker and denser now.

that must sound technically horrible, but yeah.

I supplement my weight workouts with kettlebells.

If it you find it helpful, throw it in there. If you don't like it/don't get results, stop doing it. (General statements, not referring to kettlebells). Trial and error.

Ha ha, using two of the heaviest kettlebells combined is more weight than any of you use for reps (and sometimes maxes), of course.

It's okay, but alternating is ideal due to the variety. But too much alternating is also bad.
