Are they a good snack to have when I can't get in anything else (like if I'm at work and the only way I can get food is to go to the gas station down the street)?

I honestly don't know anything about nutrition :dead:

Yes. Just try to find one that isn't full of a lot of bad fat and crap. Compare various bars if they have several and decide for yourself. You don't have to know a lot about nutrition, just have a little common sense. They're bars that contain protein. Period. If you think you might be eating them frequently as a supplement for other sources of protein (like while at work) then perhaps buy them more in bulk online or stores that sell 'em because you'll overall be paying more than usual at places like a gas station (though not always).

Protein bars are a good snack, although they can get a little expensive. But like Swartz said you have to check them out cause some times they are glorified candy bars. But for some EXCELLENT nutrition information check out John Berardi's site (http://www.johnberardi.com/index.htm). He is a sports nutritionist to many olympic teams and elite athletes.

Most protein bars are pretty much like beefed up candy bars, they contain sugar in one form or the other. They also have similar or the same ingredients as some popular chocolate bars with an extra added protein source, usually whey but if it describes itself as really healthy it will probably be soy. Yes if it is really stressful and you don't stand a chance to get a decent meal then buy one.

Protein bars should never become a mainstay in your diet. I treat them as expensive chocolate bars, though I'd prefer them over the normal ones.

you could easily make your own portable snacks if you want. The simplest form would just need oats, water, and whey, to make what is basically a protein bar. Assuming you wan't a lot of carbs in it.
Cook the whey and oats in water into a very thick porridge. Mix in anything else you want in it, too. Then spread it out on a tray and bake it for a short while until its "hard". It will harden as it cools so don't wait until it goes fully solid before taking it out of the oven.

Or if you don't want carby shit then just take some meat with you in a bag.

Carbs are used for energy right? I work at a movie theater so most of my shifts are from 6-midnight and I wouldn't need that energy. Would I still want the carbs?

What? I really don't know these things. I know next to nothing about nutrition, and I figure this is one of the best ways I can learn...

Oh, and I'm not currently lifting. I don't have time (or money for gym/weights) to lift right now, and tricking is the only thing keeping me in shape. How does that affect how much protein I'm going to want?

Carbs aren't solely used as energy for working out. They are used as an energy source to keep your body working in a "normal" manner.

I reckon you're not the one who counts calories and such. If you're not gaining weight rapidly or losing any weight at all then you are fine. Do note that you will gain weight eventually since you're in a growing phase of your life. Don't worry about it, try to eat less junk and more clean sources of food.

I recommend the xyience x-start protein bars, naturally made no preservative shit, sometimes cheaper than buying a meal out.

I don't count calories now, but I'd still rather be in the habit of eating right when the time comes that I do. That's why I'm just trying to get some help. If I'm not lifting, would homemade protein bars be a snack that I would want to take to school, or should I take something else?

Treat them as a snickers bar and base your decision on that viewpoint.

Ok, so with my lifestyle right now (school, work, and tricking), what would be a good snack to get in at school. Should I make some homemade proteinbars? Should I eat something with more carbs for energy? Or should I consider a different snack?

Some fruit concoction maybe? If it's just to fight hunger. I reckon you will have no problem at all to fill your needs by eating normal meals on a regular basis.

Ok, so I should try to stick to having the 5-6 meals a day to keep my metabolism efficient and whatnot, and just don't eat buckets of lard.

Saying you don't have time to workout is the most bullshit excuse ever. It's not like you need to be in the gym for anymore than 30-60 minutes anyway.
