View Full Version : Is rope climbing good strength training?

Because I have a rope and a tree that I could use to hang it up on and climb up it. But I don't have a place to do pull ups(no good branches either) nor do I have weights, so would rope climbling be a good substitute for all that?

If you have a tree and a rope attached to it, then the tree branch can supply enough normal force for you to do pull ups

dieIt's not angled right for pull ups. All the branches are either too big or too small and they're not horizontal anyway.

Haha.

Yes, rope climbing is a good exercise (in a very general sense).

Also, theoretically, if you can hang a rope from a tree for climbing, then you should be able to rig up some sort of crude chin up bar.
Not that it's essential, because rope climbing will have similar results, but since you mentioned it.

Grab the rope, and do pullups

just as compleks wrote...you could just attach the rope at two points of the tree to form some kind of "bar".
You would still do rope climbing without legs or pull ups on the rope though...just that it takes much more grip strength.

Grab the rope, and do pullups

but be careful with the elbows if you add weight, tendonitis hurts.

move to the amazon and climb vines into the canopy and swing from tree to tree and you will get huge and ripped like tarzan and you will find a jane and you will live happily everafter having monkey sex for the win while the gorillas and tropical penguins and parakeets and giraffes and elephants and hippotomooses cheer you on and you live in harmony with nature and the creatures of the rainforest but also watch out for hexxus and use the powers of ferngully to save you if the evil forces of manmade ecological disaster sponsored by big industry threaten you and also say hi to crysta for me too cause she is hot as a fairy

Just buy a pull up bar to go across your door. http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=3408471

If the branch is unsuitable do to angle for normal chins/pulls, do the military sort.

Rather than facing forward or back, the hands face each other, so you face along the length of the tree, either in or out depending on your preference (both would be good variety).

With a bar, one hand is often ahead of the other due to the thinness of the bar, but since branches are thick, they can be the same and wrapped around the thick branches.

Doing normal pulls/chins isn't a bad idea however, it's not bad to have one arm higher than another, it can increase your strength. The main thing is just to balance it out by training with both hands higher by switching to facing the opposite direction.
