OK so im a noob. Not completely though, I know my basic kicks from a bit of taekwondo, and I know how to do stretching efficiently. I know all the crap about training and whatever. But the thing is, where I live, there are no open gyms, and the only "gymnastics" classes I've been able to find are for the average 7 year old girl. However, I do have gym equipment at home, and I have a massive field which I could trick for about 150 metres straight on.
Is it possible or bad to learn tricking by myself? Anyone else here ever been self taught? I've got the motivation for it, so I'm not gonna do it for a week, bitch about it, and then forget.
Any advice on this people?
Or should I take up taekwondo again? The only problem I have with that is that most of what I was taught there wasn't just taekwondo, but grappling and judo, bits of karate, all kinds of crap. None of it was really tricking material.
Opinions, if you will.
(Btw, didn't know what forum section to put this in, so..Yea.)

Right now I'm in japan, so I'm not going back to NZ for another 2 or 3 months. All I can do here is stretching. I've tryed practising tornado kicks in the living room but stopped when I nearly put my foot through the tv. Gargh!!! its irritating not being able to train!

I'm not too familiar with names or anything, but there are plenty of awesomely talented people on this forum who are self taught.
So, yes, of course it is possible. It does help if you have some friend who also trick, as they can help push you and keep you motivated.

I had no martial arts of gymnastics background and only a backyard and I learned how to throw some basic tricks. I've been hurt so my progress has dwindled--the only problem is that I can't trick in the winter.

Tricking is the essence of self-teaching. No one can really show you how to do this crazy stuff. you just do it. of course a Martial arts backround is the base....

Yea. I`ve got a bit of martial arts background. I reckon I could take it from here :juji:
Most people are self taught. Btw there is a New Zealand trickers thread in the gatherings section so you could introduce yourself there if you have not already!

I agree.
As you know, there are no training courses for tricking, I can say that all tricksters are self-taught.
The martial arts/gymnastics u've learnt can really help with ur progression, but it is not neccessary.
Take me as an example, no martial arts, no gymnastics background, even my kicks are self-taught. I surf the web, learn how to kick, how to do some basic tricks, taught myself how to stretch, do weight training in my home, learn all flips without spotters... feel free to watch my vid in my signature.
Self-taught is always fine, u can learn tricking or not depends on urself, ur determination, ur reasoning on a particular tricks, ur concern on safety, and some guts.

Thanks. :-)
I have been tricking for 3 years. But before that I have 2-3 years weight training and stretching experience (my hobbies :-P)
But as we don't have martial arts / gymnastics background, we need to work extra harder for every tricks, and prepare our body well.
Good luck!

the only "gymnastics" classes I've been able to find are for the average 7 year old girl.So they won't let you in? That sucks, I had the same problem when looking for dance classes.
Or should I take up taekwondo again? The only problem I have with that is that most of what I was taught there wasn't just taekwondo, but grappling and judo, bits of karate, all kinds of crap. None of it was really tricking material.

(Btw, didn't know what forum section to put this in, so..Yea.)Better TKD mixed with other stuff (useful for self defense and conditioning at that) than no training at all.
