View Full Version : How long did it take you to master the Aerial?

Just curious how long it took everyone to do their first perfect aerial. How many tries did it take, or how many hours/days/weeks? I'm currently trying to do it right now but usually my fear of smacking my head onto the grass is holding my effort back.

I've been tricking for three years and I cannot aerial.
took me 1.5 years. actually, I'm don't have a perfected aerial yet.
If you're scared of aerials, you are probably going about them wrong. it isn't a flip at all, your cartwheel should be effortless- you should be able to do all sorts of cartwheel variations without and stress. you should just put your hands down and transition into a cartwheel if you don't think you are going to land the aerial.
Well if by "master", you mean land it 10/10 times, then it didn't take me very long. Probably 5 minutes [which means I already knew how to do it, I just never tried it]. It's a very simple move [one of the first I've ever learned], but it can be complicated if you make it complicated [you're just jumping from one leg to the other].

Sessh is actually sorta right ahaha. If you simplify things down to what they actually are, instead of trying to mimic everyones exact motions, it helps a lot.
Anyways, I can land Aerial "10/10" or "100/100" any time lol.
But, I never think that's I've "mastered" any trick. I will always (at least, for a very long time) find some little way to improve something.

Well ive started trying to trick and reading about it for about a week and the first trick i was hoping to learn was the aerial, because it was in juju's "basic" section, and because it looked alot funner than the other ones that are labeled basic. I'm trying to learn how to learn it in about 10 days for something special, anyone know if this is possible? Or does the trick take years to perform (not masterering it, just do it without failing)?

Well "perfect" aerial hardly applies to anyone, unless you're Juji or something. I don't remember how long it took me to land it consistently, but if you ask me, the aerial is THE easiest trick, I always land it and I'm a quite terrible tricker. The fact that some people can easily 540 or cheat 720 and yet struggle with a bloody aerial is beyond me, since moves like 540 have a far more complex technique.

Really? The aerial was the easiest trick for you? How many months/years were you tricking before you landed one consistently?

I don't remember, probably a few days for the side to side aerial.

It took me about 6 months to land an aerial on my right side(meaning right leg is the jumping leg) and about 3 days for my left side.

Wow, I expected this trick to take weeks to perform an autual land.

I learnt it in the second month of tricking, and i dont know it perfectly, but i can land whenever i want even by standing, i think i am getting much better at aerials now (Ive been tricking 4 months).
I learnt it by doing it off a high place first, but on ground, i mastered it by diving my hands in the ground before i jump, then jump and pull my hands backwards (just like jujimufu does it(dive))

Yeah I think you're thinking in the wrong time frame. Less than Dan's post probably didn't help =p
It's rare that a move will take years to land consistantly. I had pretty much all cartwheel variations down to the point where they were effortless when I went for the aerial. I landed it probably in the first session, but it took me probably more than a month to get it consistant.
You said you wanted to get this in 10 days for some reason? If you want a move in that time you might try an au batido instead - easier to get than the aerial I reckon. Either way I wouldn't count on getting anything within a deadline. Learning tricks doesn't really work that way in my view.
It is probably possible to get it in 10 days, but that's only really likely if you have excellent cartwheels and pretty good dynamic flexibility (head high kicks at least). Not that these are necessary to land it, but they help a lot - effectively making up for holes in technique.

It was 2003 near year end when school holidays , 4 years ago, it only take 2 or 3 week. I am learning a front flip, but it turn out to become Aerial, cause my body cant go straight that time. I did it without watching any tutorial too. I was just luckly. HA HA. Then, i continue learning my front flip. Unfortunatly, i broke my wrist and it takes like 8 month. That was in 2004. So i started to train again at 2005, and i got my front flip at 2005.

Took me 2 months to learn it (2 months after starting tricking that is). Once I landed it once, took about 2-3 weeks to clean it up and perfect it.

Considering I'd been on and off tricking for like 5 years before I landed a proper aerial, I'd say it took me a long time either way. By proper I mean straight on vertical not the shoddy bkickish "trickster" versions that everyone likes to get their panties in a twist debating about. Considering I barely trick lately I've lost it. I might land the first couple that I try in a session if I'd had a long enough break but then I lose it right away. I never drilled it hard enough after actually landing it. I had done plenty before actually doing my first one of course.
I just did a bkick from a hook kick and got a aerial!
Once you get it its sooooooooooo easy, you just do it when your walking on the street casually.
p.s
Not saying do a bkick but look at where your going to land from a hook kick is the best way to learn a "tricker" aerial but thats how I got it, took me a bit longer to get gymnast aerial.

I hope this is a joke. An aerial is a no-handed cartwheel afterall. Use common sense haha.

My sampler would probably be a one min video of me doing faceplants on the grass, with Benny Hill music on the backround
EDIT: Btw I'm one of those people who can't sense sarcasm, what that be a yes or no on the cartwheels
