recently ive been able to comfortably do backflips without needing a mat or anything, but a HUGE problem with my backflips is how im jumping EXTREMELY far back, partially out of fear.

this 1. defeats vertical height
and 2. makes it harder to land it without falling back
and 3. looks like shit

i know what i should be doing but i dont know how to go about correcting myself, as i find it to be even scarier to try a vertical backflip =[

Just jump up, man. Try to be relaxed or use a spotter.

Force yourself to go up, that's all there is to it. Perhaps imagine almost jumping forward a little and that in itself will not actually make you jump forward but rather go straight up. Usually I only give that advice for people that have a bad habit of traveling back but not out of fear. In your case it's just being scared and the only way to get over that is to face it. No matter how much it freaks you out you NEED to go straight up. It's not just you jumping back though, you're leaning back and kinda arching like mad. Keep your eye focus FORWARD. Look at the fall wall/horizon/whatever and keep your eyes on it even when you're jumping up. That'll help keep you going upright and not travel back.

I mean there's a lot of little things like this that you can adjust but will make all the difference. It's going to feel weird at first but keep doing it and you'll be glad you did.

Man, if u have a good tuck and know the technique just jump up. I advice you to ask Gus to spot you only putting one hand in ur back, wich i think it will force you to jump up.

Which is you the blue shirt or the white one?
The blue shirt guy is bending his leg too much.
Bending too much makes your jump low.

Your takeoff is already wrong mate. You're leaning so back as if you'd be doing Backhand Spring.

man, i remembered myself posting this kinda topic :agony:

anyways, if you know how to do it right then just do it! (how? that's written on the main site!) i had the same problem as you here. it fixed by itself! just practice! get hyped!!! throw it as high as you can! have no fear!

Yeah you're doing a semi-bhs. The guy in the white top just needs to tuck and he'll be fine. Compare your visionary focus: you throw your head back straight away (bhs style) whereas he spots a target in front of him.

Agree'd, what your going to have to do get chalk and make an X on the ground, or a Box of about 1' X 1'. Do your back tuck either take off from the X and land on the same X, or probably before that, do the 1' by 1' box and try to do your back tuck remaining in the box.

If it is out of fear this always helps me, Fear is very easy to conquer, think about it like this if you can do your back flip DANGEROUSLY low to the ground that should be a lot scarier than a nice high fluent back tuck with your head/neck a safe distance from the ground, so overall
if its fear your fearing the wrong thing, you should be fearing your current back tuck, not a proper one.

also in your technique i noticed that when people squat down before takeoff a lot of them make there chest face the ground. WRONG! your chest must always face forwards,if its facing the ground thats a hole other 90 degree rotation your adding to your flip, making it so when u actually flip your already a little tired(not actually tired just really don't kno how to describe the feeling) and your not going to flip as good.Throw your arms straight up DO NOT ARCH YOUR BACK!! this will also make you travel backwards. LEAN back AFTERRRRRRRR take off, not during it, so as you travel up for height and are stalling to reach your peak your gonna begin to lean back then rocket your knees to your chest(make sure u throw your arms up to set too)and keep your chest up.

Ok my hands are tired hope this helps.

I have that habit too. Even if I try my hardest to jump up, I still jump backwards. I tried swartz's advice yesterday and I landed on my head(lucky there was a soft mat). I think its because my back is arched more than normal people's backs.
