View Full Version : Fear of tricks after roundoffs

I know that it is alot easier to do a backtuck after a roundoff but I'm too scared to try it. I can do backtucks standing but when I drill my roundoff to get it nice and bouncy, I keep thinking to myself, "how am I gonna do a backflip after this??" It feels like I don't have time to flip around at all after the jump from a round off. I've seen tons of videos on youtube with crappy roundoffs that end low to the ground and they manage flips after it. But even though I have a better round off than those videos, I'm still scared to try. Anybody else ever have this problem?

The fear will go over when you actually try it. Much like learning the standing backflip in the first place: it's fucking scary until you go for it. I think everyone has had this problem when they first started.

It never hurts to have a coach help with stuff like this. They deal with these kind of problems all the time.
It was a bit scary for me too. So I just practiced R/O backhand springs, higher and higher every time, until at some point, instead of putting my arms down, I tucked and did a backflip

Damn I knew I should have worked on backhandsprings.
If you're questioning your height after a roundoff then you should really get someone to look at your roundoff before you go any further. People might start coaching you through a back flip when in reality your roundoff might be dangerously unqualified to -safely- put you into your flip.

My first r/o backflips were actually closer to r/o backwhips cuz I had this problem. I virtually get no height and just use the momentum to toss myself backward and over.
I'd say to atleast just try it. If you have a good backflip and backwhip you shouldn't have a problem at least landing it on your knees. Just need to build the confidence, then work up to height and form.

spotters help with fear its not being a pussy if you want mental support just put 100% confidence in them even if you don't and just focus on the trick, trust me just do it, i just got it, i would do 1000 round offs and lean back but not commit so nothing got done.. just do it and you'll be surprised how not scary it is
I can standing tuck alot easier and just started trying roundoffs and my roundoff is horrible. I can land it but i land very hunched over after the roundoff cartwheel and lose alot of power.
Do you hop when you standing tuck?
If you find it difficult, do the roundoff cartwheel then stall for a moment and do a standing backtuck and as you practise speed it up until it flows.

All forms of tumbling still scare the shit outta me.
Used to have this problem. The way I dealt with it is...
1. Just do it.
2. Focus on something relevant like on how your going to tuck your knee's. This just generally keeps your mind away from anything that'll make it freak out.
3.Drill round-offs until your totally comfortable about the technique; like until it's technically perfect by gymnast standards; you will be a lot more at home, which removes the fear like 100%.
It worked for me; you'll get over the fear, just take your time and don't worry.

This is where a foam pit would come in handy.

haha to be honest it really isnt, after all in an aerial to full you can see the ground pretty much the whole way through, in a r-off backtuck you cant see it all the time and have to judge where you are during the flip.
Plus any cartwheel-flip moves are safer becuase you're pretty much guaranteed to get height out of it if you do it fast, but that isnt the case with roundoffs.
