Technique. Are you doing the setup right? like typical stuff like that^^ I'm not very flexible but my 540 is okay but it took me insanely much practice to get it as it is today:tongue:

Dynamic flexibility. Don't get confused, we're not talking about the splits or anything.

To do one well, anyways.

As a side note, improvements on kicking technique can be made with greater dynamic flexibility. You don't think people can kick way above their heads after not practicing to be flexible to kick up there, do you?

No, my flexibility isn't the best and I'd say my 540s look nice. The 540 doesn't require a huge amount of flexibility to begin with. It's mostly just having the technique down and being conditioned enough to perform it well. It's not something that looks great overnight, it takes a lot of drilling.

540 kick is pretty much all technique and practise, it has very little to do with flex.

just practise, dont worry :good:

It depends... the more you lean back, the higher your kick will be [without need for greater flexibility]. But also, the more you lean back, the worse your 540 will be.

It's not so much that you need "great" dynamic flexibility, but if you cannot already do a smooth, "easy", powerful round kick or crescent kick, you will struggle with the 540.

If you can kick up to your jaw or head, your flexibility is fine enough.

The angle of your upper body has a lot to do with how high your kick is too. If you're laid back more it'll be easier to get higher. Even if you're relatively upright though there's no reason you shouldn't be able to kick around your head level while in the air.

Laid back one's don't really look as good IMO.

And I say that because I used to do those alllllllllll the time ahah.

It's also not as easy to power up the kick with your hips that high.
