i do a dynamic stretch where i hold on to a chair and extend my leg out sideways back and forth so that i can get the side split.

but almost every time i extend my leg, something in my hip joint cracks or clicks or something and its very uncomfortable. wtf is this?

should i be concerned?

Where in your hip?

You might be going too hard with the stretch or something.

Cracking noises are usually ok if there's no pain associated with them. Should probably work out what it is and try to avoid it since you say "very uncomfortable" though.

Also, dynamic stretches won't improve your passive flexibility (splits for example) very effectively. Make sure you do static-passive stretches for your adductors as well as dynamic.

If it is hurting when it cracks, then you need to get it checked out. The tendons around the joint might be flaring up and becoming swollen everytime you make it click which may be causing the pain, or something along those lines.

The right side of my hip sorta..."pops" when I am drilling axe kicks or outside crescents, but it has decreased lately since I havn't been able to workout [due to injury] and I've started increasing the amount I spend on training my flexibility. Also when I chamber my kicks sometimes [especially slow-motion sidekicks] it's more of a crunch ahah. But yeah, since I've been resting for the past 4 months the cracking and popping stuff has become less frequent.

Try resting for a bit and doing more static-passive stretches, see if it helps. If not go get it checked :good:

Yep. Popping in the front of the hip can be caused by the tendon of a hip flexor muscle - called the psoas major - flopping over a bony prominence as your leg drops back from an axe or crescent kick. The tendon of an inflexible psoas muscle will catch more, and is therefore more likely to cause the popping.

Chronic fatigue, since it can reduce flexibility, sometimes leads to this popping noise. Working at a reduced range of motion can also decrease flexibility - this also fits with the problem, since high kicks involve reduced length in the psoas muscle.

For these reasons, stretching and resting the hip flexor muscles may reduce the popping. Stretching the hip flexors after your kicking practice is probably a good habit to get into after the popping goes away too.

=p Just saw you were talking about the side of the hip. Ah well, could be a similar cause anyway.

welcome to the hip popping club :good:

mine have done it for years.

apparently its 'fat deposits being ground down'

Mine used to do it when I kicked, but as I did it more and more they've stopped.

mine still clicks cuz i began to strech recently...the more i strech the less my hips click and stuff...goes the same for dynamic and relaxed streches...

I've also heard air, or mineral deposits? I'm thinking cracking is air, popping fat, and grinding minerals?

I don't get how it could be fat "grinding down". Gas dissolving out of the joint fluid, or tendons and ligaments catching on bony bits are what I've heard. The tendon one makes sense with my experience.
