What are the benefits of doing barbell curls over something that involves pronation/supination of the hand such as a screw curl?

Full ROM of the wrists if you use a straight barbell. Regular dumbbell curls work in the same way, make sure you keep full supination of your wrists though.

Hammer curls work your brachioradialis (situated on your forearm).

There is no practical difference in terms of affecting your biceps.

i think that you miss out on a lot of hypertrophy potential if you do straight curls as the main job of the bicep is supination of the hand

The main job of the biceps is bending the arm, especially when it is supinated since it is then stronger than the forearm.

I doubt it and I personally despise EZ-bars and whatnot. The reason why I despise them is because they promote a decrease in the ROM of your wrists. A friend of mine has been using nothing but EZ-bars and hammer curls, he cannot fully supinate his wrists anymore.

I personally see no point in fiddling around with angles. Biceps is one muscle, concentration curls help focus on the long head of biceps brachii. I still don't know what a tricker would do with big biceps anyway. 4 exercises is my complete pool to choose from when doing biceps work. Those exercises are:

Dumbbell curls.
Barbell curls.
Hammer curls.
Concentration curls.

I still see no reason to use angled equipment or skip full flexion of the wrists.

thats basicly what i use, but im going to only do concentration curls where i fully supinate my hand on the way up and fully pronate it on the way down to see if i notice any difference. i dont do bicep isolation very often so im just trying to get the most out of what i do

The difference will be that you will activate your brachioradialis more. You'll also probably have to lower the weight if you're going to twirl it around.

when you read anything about biceps a rant must follow:

anyone, enlighten me, what's so beautiful about "biceps"?
Am I an exception to think that legs, abs, pecs, lat, and so on and, oh, the ever-so-forgotten overall picture is much more important than your biceps?

over-sized anything is most probably fugly and the biceps is most useless in tricking as rahf already mentioned.

Yeah I do all bicep workouts with straight bars. I pretty much just stick to barbell, concentration and hammer curls.

The biceps are responsible for elbow flexion and forearm supination.

So in theory, to work them optimally, you use a movement which involves both actions. Also, if you want a fuller ROM, then do dumbbell curls on a slight incline.

Some people use an EZ bar because the straight bar can be too uncomfortable on their wrists or elbows.

I reckon they should use dumbbells instead and fully supinate their wrists to promote a dynamic increase in ROM.

EZ-bars are crap, I compare it with doing partial squats, you do them because you don't have the patience to slowly work your way towards a full squat.

I use an EZ Bar for heavy curls, and I have no problems supinating my wrist, and my biceps have grown proportionally to the weight i've added to the bar.

They certainly aren't crap for me.

I think that people start off using the e-z bar becuase they dont know what else to use, and think that its good for their biceps. Then they just never break the habit. I dont think its a case of people actively choosing an e-z bar if they understood the arguments for against it.

The only bars we have in our gym are olympic bars (20kg), hammer bar (10kg) and the e-z bar (10kg), and seeing as people dont really bicep curl THAT much, its usually easier to whack some 15's on the hammer/ez bar than put 7.5's on an olympic bar.

I actually use the ez-bar for workouts where I use it for more than 10 sets because I have carpal tunnel in my wrists.. so anything over 10 with a straight bar starts to hurt a bit

Phil D

good idea, they are useless.
Why do you say that?

Pussies.
Yeh its a valid excuse though, as anatomically the elbows do not extend straight down, they go out slightly

So when curling with a straight bar where your hands are a fixed distance apart, it can put a fair bit of pressure on the wrists/forearms. I think this must vary from person to person

Why do you say that?Well, curls don't help tricking at all, and I can't think of any other sport that relies on the strength that is gained through doing curls.

thereid: Professional strongmen rely heavily on their biceps. Incidentally, they do a lot of curling. haha

And how about BODYBUILDING? That sport certainly has direct use for curling.

Crew?

The best my arms have ever looked was when I put the most time into my EZ curl bar. As long as that's not the only bicep workout you do you're probably fine.

People do curls mainly for aesthetics, but personally I don't like the look of large biceps, so to me they're not a very useful excerise.

Also biceps aren't just for aesthetics you dumb cunts, they increase your pulling power (also your ability to curl and clean obviously), improve chokes and arm bar escapes in BJJ, and improve your ability to attract teenage girls.
