That's just because YOU'RE no good at sports games.

Athlete-
a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill.

Pretty broad definition there actually. Even this (http://www.speedstacks.com/) can be a sport for athletes.

I was at one point...maybe 2-3 years ago. When I was tricking and lifting nearly everyday.
Now I am just an out of shape, skinny white guy. :agony:

I'm an athlete...for the time being.

I almost was before I started tricking. Well, I could run fast and jump high. I was always in the top of those little PE pentathlons we had haha. Which in high school PE makes you think your pretty hot stuff.

Then I realize how useless I was, like most kids are now, due to my lack of flexibility, strength, coordination, etc.
Not to mention generally low upper body strength, as is the norm (usually) of people who don't work out that much.

Now I practice strength training so I'm no longer weak, I've gained quite an amount of flexibility (more dynamic than static), I've (finally) train(ed) basic kick form, and blah blah I do a bunch of different tricks. I have full body awareness.

I think body awareness is most key in these sort of things. The average Joe can't coordinate his body to perform a certain task: and this is one thing that is built through tricking. To be better at moves, to advance to higher moves, you need to know what your body is doing, and be able to control what it's doing. Your entire body: all parts of it.

YAY

I'm basically going on about nothing. I still envy people who are able to do a bunch of athletic things that I'll never do. This ranges from simple small things to more advanced blatantly hard/technical things. Non-tricking things is what I'm referring to.

Well apparently I'm an athlete since I'm a "a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill": tricking!!!!1 No wait, I'm a fat ass and my tricking abilities are pathetic at best.

I use to be a big time athlete. I did state athletics when i was young and got champion sports boy 2 years in a row im primary school. Then when it came to highschool, i kept going further and further down, well atleast in running neway. In long jump, high jump and hurdles i still was the best for my year  think my best long jump just was like 5.4 metres and my 100m time is 12.09...but im sure tonnes of people here can slaughter that.

That's because you're "unique" and a "individual"

Anyone who has a hobby that is physically demanding, is an athlete.

For further proof, look at the Tampax sport commercials, they have gymnastics, martial arts, and other sports.

So.. you don't have to work to become an athlete. You can just pay your $6.50 and stand at the edge of the court at Community College Drop-In TetherBall, with your gut hanging out and be an athlete?

If he's actually moving and playing tether ball, then yes he is.

Of course he's not if he's just standing there "with his gut out".

Also, it doesn't matter if your physically fit to be an athlete, that's not a stipulation.

Are you going to let a book categorize stuff like that for you. I was under the impression that being an athlete actually took some work.

Edit: Okay nvm, I was going to try and stir up a discussion about athleticism and the likes. But any insecurities I had concerning that is gone, because at least I'm better than Towels. Just.. straight up better than him in every single way. Oh well, come out next season, Towels, and try again.

Using the dictionary definition is a little flawed. In a sense, a word really means what the majority of the population thinks it means. For instance, if you said "I'm an athlete" most people wouldn't think of an acrobat. Nor, if you said "I'm an acrobat" would many people jump at the word athlete I don't think.

Flowers
Feb-12-08, 03:45 AM
that's a valid point, but when using that argument, you have to agree that the majority of people debating the issue are english speaking people and thus follow the rules of the english dictionary.

We can't change the actual meaning of a word because some people don't really know what i means fully.

As an english speaker, I never considered the dictionary or conventional definitions of things as law. Words and their meanings change, from person to person and time to time. The conventional use of the word "Google" was completely different from what people usually refer to now when they use that word. Things keep changing. Video Gamers are calling themselves athletes now (for a lot of justifiable reasons, but does that truly make them athletes?). When you say something as abstract of a concept as athleticism and athlete, different people get different pictures in their head, one person might see a basketball player, another might see a golfer, another might see a Competitive Halo Player. Thus the discussion.

I still stand by my side however.

I always thought of athleticism to be the image of physical fitness however, not of Competitiveness.

Just because you can do something that is athletic in nature (tricks!!!1) doesn't make you an athlete. Much like just because a guy is feminine doesn't make him a girl.

Flowers
Feb-12-08, 03:36 PM
those are apples and oranges glide.

Doing something athletic makes you an athlete by definition because that's what souly defines an athlete.

Being a girl is defined by having the right parts, not doing the right things.

Feb-12-08, 04:42 PM
Well perhaps I'm an elitist, but for me an athlete is someone who is really the shit in what he does, someone who trains hard. I would never call myself an athlete just because I can do a flashkick, I'll call myself a lazy trickster at best. I'll call myself an athlete when I'm effectively the sex (which will probably be never).

Well i would call my self an athlete, ive been doing several of diffrent martialarts 7 as i can remember..

Shotokan karate
Wingtsun
Muaythai
Judo
Greek roman wrestling
Mma

martialarts was my first real hobby, it pretty much started when i was around 14years old... i was pretty skinny when i did martialarts around 48kg and 182cm high

i suddenly saw that i was incesure, not confident, and alot of other personal things that relied to my underweight... So i began bodybuilding for the reason of personal things and for to help my martialarts

slowly my body changed alot and i fell inlove with bodybuilding, it changed my life... from being an afraid, insecure, shy guy to an positiv, happy, very confident guy

i gained around 45kg over 2years of training ;) wich means i was around the 90kgs that ive cutted abit of now so im 75kgs quite ripped but still strong

i see my self doing Extreme sports, martialarts, bodybuilding and now ive opened my eyes to some thing ive never been able to attemt doing "breakdance / tricking"

so i see my self as an atlete ! its a life style
