View Full Version : My Take On Samplers and Battles

Daniel Graham

I think its important for me 2 get this out there for ppl who r new 2 tricks and ask me how 2 improve themselves

in MY opinion, the way I see, MY take on it, the way I feel about it, MY advice 2 PEOPLE who ASK ME IS

i release samplers for myself and for other people who choose 2 benefit from it because i love 2 watch myself over and over and over again so i know what i need 2 work on.

i think if you are focusing on making your snapu, for example, perfect, and show it 2 the world by releasing it in your sampler for praise its not what samplers are about.

samplers are about seeing the true color of your tricks, not about, "ok i gotta make this trick bc i want 2 put it in my sampler, but i'm never going to do it again after i land it for this video" you arent being true 2 yourself or the community if you land it once and put it in the sampler

samplers dont always need to be released 2 the mass community. you could do it and show it 2 your crew and get advice

i watch people's sampler over and over and over so i could see what i could work on and get ideas for tricks

dont get me wrong, you want 2 put the good shit out there, but its the thought behind it, like if you see my samps, they are all about the stuff im working on. sweating, working hard, its not perfect, you see me fall.

you dont need 2 prove 2 anyone how good you are. you prove it 2 yourself. it depends how far you want to get. samplers dont define you, they help you.

for me samplers are the tricks i want 2 improve on or make up

i dont want people new 2 tricking 2 thinkk they cant release something bc its not good or that they have 2 get certain tricks before they could release a samp. we all started at the bottom, have fun with your samps, dont try 2 make it the final say

as far as battles, i watch them shits over and over 2 bc i want 2 see wut other ppl are working on so i could train it and stay in the game.

i perform in battles so i could watch the footage afterwards and observe what i gotta do.

battles are new 2 the community and sport and ppl are taking it way 2 seriously. ppl are going 2 win and people are going 2 lose. battles show where you stand and show you exactly what it is you may want 2 work on in comparsion with other trickerz.

its about the experience and the adreneline. its fun, not battle 2 kick someones ass, its 2 prove 2 yourself whatever it is you want 2 prove 2 yourself

i respect all trickers who put samplers out there bc they arent afraid 2 get bashed and i respect trickers who battle bc they arent afraid 2 lose.

i only did 2 battles in my 11 years of tricking, hurricane and flipmonks, and it was fun and i gained a lot of experience. ppl had fun and thats all that matters.

me, i only released 2 samps of myself, and a lot of other ppl have made some of me and i learned from everyone of them

love you papitos

Why don't you go train instead of being an asshole and posting a comment that is irrelevant to this thread? Seriously bro go suck on a lemon...after the battle last year at Hurricane Loopkicks Gathering that changed my whole perspective on what I thought about myself as a tricker and how I was gonna train from now on. I'm working to be ready for this summer so that I know where I stand now. I'm actually kinda liking my tricks these days. LoL

i dont think anyone can really say stuff about not being true to themselves. because unless your that person you dont know wut being true to themselves mean. it may have different meanings for people.

for one to have a really clean combo maybe just that persons style. to say they shouldnt focus and retry getting that combo on vid clean for a sampler..isnt fair..it may be ok for u but not nessisarily for others.

Tricking is like religion.

No two people have the exact same beliefs.

(but I liked you're ideas Dan. Keep it fun guys)

Feb-12-08, 07:39 PM
im talking about the main premise here. to work on a trick to make it clean and to continuously do it and keep pushing yourself is one thing, to do it and land it for a video and stop practicing it is another

Who just up and stops after making a sampler?

I think having fine ass tricks in order to put them in a sampler can be a good fire under your ass and motivation tactic.

Then you take the props/criticism from it and keep improving.

lol Me and the Axe 2 aerial are like that.

After I got one on tape, I stop doing them.

then finally 8 months or so later, i got them again

a lot of ppl do it they land shit on samps then wen i see them i say o i like that move then they tell me oh i just worked on it for the samp havent done it since

i agree with your second part

Seriously? Haha that's such a weird mentality. I don't see why someone would work for something just for a sampler, and not do it afterwards. If they'd work hard for it for a sampler, I would hope they enjoy it enough to improve it further.

But it's not anyone's concern but their own really.

Using samplers as tools for progression ? Sure I agree, as long as you do your best.

Edit: I didn't even know people tricked just too get cool footy, as opposed to the trick itself, lol.

ppl always ask me how 2 improve the best way is make samps not just for release, but all the time so you could watch it over and over and see wut you need 2 work on. that is my point samps just dont have 2 be about the praise. the best way 2 get better is to critique and examine yourself in comparison 2 wut is out there

I don't think you ought to be telling people what to do. This is an interesting post, but I think you should have kept it to "this is MY opinon and why I make samplers" instead of "hey noobs, this is the kind of tricker you should be."

o_O I think a lot of people on TT need to go back to school and take some remedial english classes for realz. Instead of people appreciating someone who has been in the game for a long time expressing his opinion to try and help make this community move forward they find any little way to try and bash it. Sometimes I honestly don't see why people like Dan Perez, Graham, Nick Vail and Sessh waste there time trying to help people out. Nobody ever fucking appreciates anything. But once they get stuck on something or get lost. They wanna come running back.

Yeah this is basically my trick mentality. I just wanna drill all my moves, and get them all "perfect", I'm a long way off, and I will never reach it [in my eyes] but it's the type of tricker I'd like to be.

I personally get what Mr. Graham is trying to say. The way I learned to trick is by watching samplers non-stop. I'll replay a move dozens of times to see is what is actually involved. It blow my mind when I first myself trick, after that I critiqued everymove now there ten times better. I was kinda scared to put out a samp because I don't think it will hold a candle to others. It does seem better just to make one for yourself first, good tip.

After making a sampler, does everyone else watch it like nonestop over and over. Before bed and shit like that for the first week after it came out? (i do....)

lol I'll render it, then watch it in high quality. Then upload and watch it on youtube just to see it there.

QFT

I dislike this thread, i'm not sure why, i think there is too many people being stupid little bitches in it.

As for the main post, hmm i can't say i have ever heard of people doing that kind of thing (like learning tricks and never doing them again after a sampler) but your point about making samplers or collecting footage just to improve yourself seems pretty true :good: i haven't released any samplers but i like watching my own footage to see what i can do well and see what i can't.

I'm not quite sure i follow the whole battle bit though. I don't agree with the whole winning and losing thing, i far prefer battles where people are just trying to out do each other tricks wise but know each other well and are doing it just for fun/laughs. Don't like the whole winning losing thing because it appears to create hostility (unless the people battling are good freinds)

Well Andy you can go fuck a hot rock because your opinion to me is as about as useful as a truck to a deer in headlights. But Jan I would very much so like to see that twist cork. In your sampler I don't recall seeing you do that.

jan
Feb-13-08, 07:16 AM
That's because my inability to twist, mixed with my lacking eyesight on my left eye (which is the direction I do most of my tricks towards), made me unable to do anything past a standing fulltwist, btwist/atwist variations, and an old-school cork.
60 degree less vision kinda sucks when you're spinning sideways and diving straight at the ground, and you can't see where you are until you either land or faceplant:D
