View Full Version : No natural tricking talent?

I am really interested about starting tricking and am willing to invest 7 hours a week on it, in addition with weight training and conditioning, the thing is I am wondering if I have no natural talent at all.

Ok so I have a loong history in karate and can do all the tricking basic kicks, but when I learnt how to do a front roll last year it took me longest out of anyone in the class (Though most people were 2 or more years younger than me). So I invested 30 minutes today to learn the most BASIC BASIC move you can do which builds up to tricking which is a handstand. In those 30 minutes all I have to show is to be able to do a headstand with a pillow against a wall - I tried doing a handstand against a wall for 10 minutes but I could never do it my feet only got halfway.

WHY CAN"T I EVEN DO A HANDSTAND??? Does anyone know why I am having so much trouble learning this basic stuff.

So you expect perfect handstands within 30 minutes?

Even basic stuff takes time to get.

Ya but I thought it took most people longer like the handstand tutorials I was looking at automatically assume you can do a handstand against a wall which I can't even do.

So take a video of yourself doing a handstand, and compare it to the others. This is something you can do for any trick, and it helps to be more self-reliant.

Instead of taking a mere 30 minutes, and crying you have no talent, invest the time into it, and examine your technique so you may refine it. Things take time. Keep that in mind.

Also, a handstand isn't very essential. Work the basic kicks (tornado, pop 360, etc), and tumbling techniques (round-off, cartwheel, etc). Read all the tutorials supplied on this site and forums.

Don't get down about those dang handstands.

Handstands are a strength (not power) skill, and are completely useless in terms of Tricking. I'm sure that the greater majority of Trickers here cannot hold a consistent handstand in the same spot without walking or arching or dying for more than 10 seconds. It's not a big deal, it's a little bit of technique yes, but it's mostly strength that must be developed by practicing it over and over.

No one can rival loveisalie2's handstand abilities.

There is probably a reason you're not getting these concepts as quickly as you'd like

ya know handstands are always funny to me. cause sometimes they seem like strength and sometimes they seem like balance.

like if i crouchdown and did a handstand from the floor up it feels like strength. but if i was standing up and jumped into them..it feels more like balance..it didnt feel like i was using the same muscles once i got into the handstand on either one.

7 hours a week is quite abit for a beginner. Chances are, most of that time is going to be be spent by you getting frustrated with progress and learning the basics. They take time. Instead, find some tutorials, create some flexibility, strength training, and basics routines that will help you get more fit for tricking.

Flexibility: http://trickstutorials.com/index.php?page=content/flexibility
Strength: http://trickstutorials.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=13

And there's tons of tutorials on basics on youtube and the main site. The main thing about tricking is to have fun and enjoy yourself :good:

hey falconn, i'll tell u a story that i tell a lot of ppl in ur situation.

a lot of u ppl on the forum may know "animal". he started off tricking in 03. back then, he was frightfully terrible at tricks. he had no power, was inflexible, had no balance, had no MA background, and couldn't even do the most basic of kicks. so all in all, in terms of "natural talent" he was very ungifted. but after a few years of drilling and training he really found his stride and he's now he's the best team HTU has to offer, quite well known, and respected on TT for his skill.

if you don't know animal, check out his bilang sampler here:

so dont worry dude, if u want it bad enough, just keep on tricking. and dude, ur 16! u have plenty of years ahead of u!

about the its more balance then strength. dude think about this you know you take strength in your fingers to keep you in that position and then strength in you hands to keep you up and strength in your stomach to hold your legs. heres the thing when I do a handstand it takes me a while before I feel affect if you were to hold your handstand for long or do them continuesly after a while you'd feel when it takes strength to hold you up.

dont even worry about handstands.
Listen to what everyone is saying
-flexibility
-drill basic kicks(roundhouse, inside/outside crescent, front kick, hook, etc.)
-watch vids and tuts

It's aight, everything just takes practice. Nobody really starts out with tricking talent... gl!

Dont worry about that, you just have to practise more than people who got talent.

If you've hit a wall when trying to learn a move, you need to either move on, or try a different approach to doing the move. The philosophy of "If I just keep throwing it and throwing it eventually I'll get it" sucks. Try something you're body has never felt.

Don't worry if you use long time to progress in the beginning. I used 3 weeks of my summer holiday to learn cartwheel, and then I trained almost every day...
I started to trick this summer, and didn't learn more than two tricks before December. And than suddenly I started progress. Don't give up in the beginning:wink:

Wait, so your freaking out over not learning a trick/technique/prerequisite in half an hour? If your looking for instant gratification, tricking is not for you. I consider myself lucky if I can learn a new trick in a day. Or even a week. And to get it perfect and land it consistantly? That takes A LOT of time. Even easy tricks, like au batido, I screw up on every once in a while.

Using a fictitious character's training to try to compare to someone in real life is totally illogical haha.

I usually just stand there on my hands, and listen to Children of Bodom. In fact, I am doing a handstand right now.

If you're hellbent on doing that handstand, then doing some weights to increase your shoulder and core strength will be a big help.

Balance is something that just takes practice. Ever watch a baby learning to walk? They start off just hanging onto various objects, such as tables, and if they let go, they fall down. And die.

But those who live learn to stand in place and then take a few steps and finally, they learn to trick. That is nature's way.

Now go have fun.

Well after 20 minutes of practice tonight I got a handstand going against the wall, though I only could hold them for 2 secs (Not because of muscle sterngth because of loss of balance even though it was on a wall). I still think I am progressing very slowly but at least I showed some progress.

don't worry dude the longest I've ever held a handstand was about 7 seconds. And I wasn't in one place I was practically stumbling the whole time XD

haha

as for handstands, what I did was weight training, alot of it, miltary presses I would assume work well, since its shoulders :P but yeah, don't just target shoulders, cause then you will look weird, and deformed, then go against a wall, and slowly start bringing yourself out, it will take time, 30 min is too short to master it.

muscle strength = balance

the stronger you are the easier it will be to make the slight adjustments necessary to keep your balance.

Whaaaat? Do military presses if you want to improve military presses and clean & jerks and such. Hold handstands against a wall(while tensing your abs) to improve handstands.
Weightlifting is a good idea for vertical leap, but I don't think that concept can be applied as effectively with handstands.

I think I'm also not very talented at tricking. I'm crap at anything which involves me being airbourne or upsidedown.

Hand stand takes time. I couldn't do one a year ago, then I had this routine that everynight while waiting for PC to shutdown I will attempt handstand until PC is off. I then switch off at mains.

One year later, I can do handstand more than 10 secs and handstand walks.
