View Full Version : High Protein Diets

I guess this question has been answered probably a trizillion times and it's probably painfully obvious, but I'm a retard, so things don't come easy to me .
I was just wondering what effect does high protein diets have on you? (Taken into account that you're work out at least 3 times a week). Could a human being survive on just pure protein shakes/ protein bars and vitamin pills?
I guess one of the effects would be extreme exhaustion? Since carbs and fat acids are essential for storing/supplying our body with energy. What would happen if proteins made up 3/4 of your diet? Is that even possible?
I've heard that diets high on protein combined with poor conditioning/work outs, would lead to a growth of your internal organs (heart/lungs etc), since they work non stop. So basically, in the end your heart would become a monster and eat your soul out lol. But that sounds fucking ridiculous
I'm kinda curious about that, so a link to a previously discussed thread on the same matter or just a short reply would be nice .

It is generally a good idea to increase your protein intake if you want to start working out regularly. Though I would say it doesn't need to be very "high" (~1.5xyour bodyweight in pounds would be high) unless you are training for serious muscle gains. (more than the typical '3 workouts a week')
As far as the effects of eating an all protein diet, or eating 3/4 of your calories from protein... that's pretty retarded, and I'll let someone like Rahf respond to it. haha

The question is why would one want to survive on that? The body is adaptable, but doing such is a thing is stupid. Why would you even consider it?

The CNS main fuel is glycogen. Despite glyconeogensis (I think thats the right term) being able to occur it would be idiotic to starve the body of it's main fuel. Our cells are made of fats, doesn't it make sense to eat fats?
What would happen depends on how many calories worth of it you consume. If you ate at maintenance level with 100% protein (which is almost impossible to do) your body will probably find a way to stay alive, but you won't maximize your energy potential due to obvious reasons.
What do you mean is it even possible? How can it not be possible?

Hypertrophy of the heart happens normally in response to exercise. Hypertrophy in the absence of exercise is a bad thing and can lead to numerous complications. I don't understand why you think your internal organs grow on a high protein diet though. Organs grow as a protective response to an stimulus that is larger than they are used to to help them become better at handling that stimulus.

Search button, but you're an idiot for even thinking about this in the first place. Learn basic nutrition then come back and apologize to everyone for reading your retarded topic.

diets consisting of mainly fat and protein are pretty common among body builders (e.g. atkins and stuff, just look it up). but I don't think that you have to stay below <20g of carbs for a long time on that kind of diet, besides, it's just seems unnatural to do so..
that "growth of your internal organs"-thing is truly ridiculous, anyone who told you that must be total moron
Will write more thouroughly when I get back from the barber shop but I can say this:
Fat and protein are life-sustaining macronutrients, without them you die.

That's true...I guess I was too lazy for that :eh:

I never said I considered that, you retard. I was simply asking a question on something that got into my head...
Search button, but you're an idiot for even thinking about this in the first place. Learn basic nutrition then come back and apologize to everyone for reading your retarded topic.
Why am I an idiot for thinking about that? Yes...it should be painfully obvious for those who have somewhat good knowledge on health and nutrition, but I made no such claims. If you would be a teacher and a pupil asked an "obvious" question, would you call him an idiot and tell him to stfu and gtfo?
Yes, I won't deny I need to read more on nutrition, but I'm not going to apologize on anything, you sweaty cunt. I didn't ask you to read this topic! Neither did I ask you to reply to it. So unless you have some serious illness that forces you to push on every topic you come across, I don't owe you an apology...If you didn't want to bother typing all that or even read it, you could just link me to a place/book w/e that explains it. But obviously you like to get your panties in a twist, because of stupid topics and flame people with little knowledge in certain areas :good:.
Otherwise, thanks for the rest of your and others informative replys...

Ok, able to give a more elaborated answer now.
High protein is a relative term and if we look at the numbers you gave then there are two general outcomes:
Scenario 1: You live on protein drinks/bars and vitamin pills.
The results of this diet would eventually be death since you're not getting enough fat into your system. Fat is needed to sustain the processes that distribute fat (lipolysis, catabolism, de novo lipogenes etc.) In any case the user would feel horrible and would not perform well in any type of everyday task.
Scenario 2: 3/4 of total intake is made up of protein.
This diet would be slightly more humane but you're still looking at skewed hormone reactions due to little fat and high protein intake.
I haven't heard anything about growing organs, it doesn't make all that much sense really since they are working non-stop anyways  They could get clogged up perhaps but actual growth sounds somewhat like an urban myth. Don't take my word for it though, that's speculation on my part.
Hope that cleared things out for you.

Well, my sis, studying pharmacy, says it is possible for a person, to make the body used to work on protein - just like it's possible for the human body not see alchohol as a energy source (in a way so it's not really considered calories. Just think about some alchoholics - they're skinny as hell!)
With that said, I don't think it's very healthy ;)

Interesting to note on alcohol is that it generally does not store as bodyfat, alcoholics are skinny because of malnutrition in general, not just because of an adaptation to a poisonous substance. Protein is used in the same sense as carbohydrates if there is an excess present in the body and nitrogen balance is reached.

Regardless of it being a tiny fraction; it is there and without it we would not function.
Look Rozon, my reply was sarcastic in some parts, especially about the apology part i'm surprised you got all flustered over it anyway (especially because you're naked in your avatar). My main problem was that you stated that you "thought" this topic would have been posted before and then at the end you just asked someone to link you. It's like posting a topic saying, "someone do a search for protein intake and post me the link".
Obviously you are not a pupil of mine, but of course no, I would not. With that being said I would encourage him to figure out why this would not be a good idea.
It's as simple as going on google and typing in something like, "importance of fats and carbohydrates". Grated there are a few people on this website that read up and know what they are talking about but you would get a 10x more detailed response via a more credible medical website (granted I don't always agree with modern medicine).
I don't come to this forum to do other's websearching and post links for them.
I'd recommend a book of mine called "Näringslära för Högskolan" but unfortunately I reckon it only comes in Swedish.

Okay thanks, dude. I'll look it up. I don't think Swedish language will be a problem, since I understand it for the most part .

Some rumours say it strains your kidneys, it's hard to trust research with all the vegetarians out there corrupting it to save their animal friends they love more than humans though.

If you want to gain maximum amount of strength versus muscle mass then you need to keep your energy intake on a stable level. What I reckon you'll be best off doing is just eat good solid food. Your protein intake should be slightly higher than a normal persons since your muscles will need the extra amount of amino acids to stay stable, so do take that extra meatball or chicken wing when you eat.
Keep it simple mate, eat more and eat clean.
I reckon people normally recommend "Starting Strength" by Rippetoe. Don't take my word for it though, I have not read it myself.
