You know, the thing you see lots of cheerleaders do. Does the momentum help, or does it screw you up?

No, it makes you implode.

Any small step or hop is just to help them mentally because they're in the habit of doing it. It doesn't actually aid you physically. It's just a stupid habit people have.

It gives you a slight boost in momentum but makes you lean back.

I think it helps. If you watch Joe Eigo do standing backs in the gym, occasionally he will punch them.
Yeah, he will punch on standing backs.
I'm totally not explaining that.

It helps.
Tho Swartz is probably right that it's more mental.

yeah i guess if you use it properly, it provides some of the momentum you do not get from a standing

That guy didn't use it right.
Of course it helps, just as a round off helps [but to a much smaller degree].

Shit, was that you? Sorry dude, I thought that was a random guy.
Ok, height was nice, but you were pretty slow jumping out of the hop. You gotta hop, and then jump real quick after you land the hop. Otherwise, you might as well just do it standing.

eh yeah it can help, if u put a lil power in it
and put ur feet behind your body you block and go straight up.
I always make that lil hop.

It doesn`t make you lean back.

It depends on your reactive/plyometric ability. Those who are better at rebounding/absorbing momentum will be better suited to use it.

with whip backs or flashkicks i think it messes you up and throws you off, although i think if your throwing a standing full or standing double full for some reason it does seem to add some...... but hey try both... and find what works for YOU! ur set up might be different from us.
