View Full Version : has your height anything to do with it?

hi, I wondered if your height has any impact on your abilities in tricking. like, has a shorter person it easier than a tall person when he/she is taking a frontflipp, backflip or whatever..

basically, no. What would you do if it did? ...Get leg transplants? The only reason I see for such thinking is justification for not being as good, which is bullshit.

Yeah what if you were 6'3" and had 5 foot long arms and your legs were 2 feet long and you had a 4'3" upper body?

I think it would make the slightest difference but how would you know? You couldn't try tricking one day at 5"5 & the next at 6"3 & picking the size with the best advantage. Why care?If you like tricking just get on with it!JUST TRICK!!!

Yeah what if you were 6'3" and had 5 foot long arms and your legs were 2 feet long and you had a 4'3" upper body?
You're missing the point. It's not just the lever effect. Bodies are all made of same substances, regardless of size. You ever wonder why they don't just increase the size of every aspect of a remote control car proportionally and have an incredibly efficient electric car? A human may be able to jump higher than a frog, but the frog's 1 foot jump is 25 times it's body height. The ability to overcome gravity remains relatively the same no matter what size you are, but amount of work needed to move that body is less the shorter you are.
Gymnasts who are about the 6 foot tall range who end up getting strong enough to do an iron cross, end up working a lot harder for it, and very often end up breaking their own sternums due to the stress from the incredibly powerful pec muscles. The sternum may be larger to compensate for the larger pecs, but the structural integrity of the bone tissue is the same.
Just think of why Ant's can lift 50x their own body weight with ease. And there is no insect over the size of a small cat. An insect larger than that would be crushed by its own exoskeleton.

The only way to increase the spin of an object, but keep the amount of work needed the same is to decrease the rotational mass. but BboyAgua is right the amount of work needed is peportianat to the persons size. So shorter trickers only have it better in theory. If you need further proof that size has nothing to do with ability jus compare Trickers like Anis and Steve Terada

Basicly, if you have nice and short, flexible, strong legs, you would have a really good body for tricking. If your tall and not anis or any of those guys, you could die or get paralyzed for life.

6 feet is average. So he's average for a full grown male. But for a good trickster he is somewhat tall.

Mar-17-08, 09:46 AM
i don't think size has that much to say, as long as you're proportional. but if you are really small or really tall, the tall one would definetly be at a dissanvantage.. Everything that's "normal" doesn't matter that much though
tyoogoha

Mar-17-08, 10:03 AM
hehe, i consider 180cm to be tall :P but that's because i'm short.
but i think that everything between tiny (bigger than dwarfs) to maybe 185 or so, shouldn't have a problem with tricking, if you get higher than that i think you're more likely to get injured etc. but i find that often long people are helluva good twisters though ;)

I just took a look at some professional gymnastics videos to come to a conclusion, I observed that they were all roughly the same height, which was reasonably tall, about 180cm plus or something; I am bad at judging height, but there were no short people. I think it's stupid to come to logical conclusions on this topic because there are so many variables you just never take into account; instead, look into the real thing where it actually shows.

I don't understand why people even bring it up in the first place. Whether you're short or tall and want to trick you just accept the way you are and do the best you can. No amount of knowledge on how height does/doesn't affect tricking will help you.

You're indeed bad at judging heights because most elite gymnasts are shorter than 180 cm, and if they're all short it's for a reason. It's easier for shorter people to flip, because it takes them less torque to flip than tall people.

Exactly, even a generic study [say look at how long it takes people of different heights to learn a backsault] would fail due to the many other factors which are involved.
Also any anecdotal evidence is completely pointless. I'm like 192 cm or something, I really don't care lol.
Just do the tricksss, this topic should only occur out of curiosity/interest/perhaps physics or something but whenever it comes up it's always someone tall or short looking for an excuse.
