I was wondering if adding more milk to reduce the thickness would take away from what the drink is supposed to "do"

If by supposed to "do" you mean provide you with extra protein, then why would that take away from what it's supposed to do haha? The protein is still in there, heck by adding milk you're adding more (plus other stuff, fat lactose etc).
Like, if someone took a bunch of AIDS and put it in a glass, would adding more water to it somehow dilute the effectiveness of AIDS? No, the original content is still in there, plus more.
Haha, mogwai is going to love this thread:tongue: He loves answering questions like that;P To bad he's not home atm XD
No, it will not hinder the effects of the protein drink. A combination of casein and whey give an better effect than the two would separately. The sum is bigger than the parts that make it.

If you're drinking it with water, why not just add more water?

I believe this will be the first quote I'm going to keep from anyone on this forum.
Staying on topic: As I do not drink milk myself, I, personally, would not add milk to a protein shake. I would, however, add whatever original liquid you put the other ingredients in more (or ice) if the shake is not smooth enough. If you started with milk, then I guess you'd add milk.
I'm somewhat new to creating shakes myself.

If you're asking whether or not adding milk reduces the effectiveness of the shake then my general answer would be "No" but that does depend on the purpose of the shake to begin with...
