I picked up a new issue of Muscle & Fitness yesterday, and it had an article in it with some interesting exercises. Some gym that this guy has in California has people do a bunch of high volume, intense circuit training. They use a lot of combination moves and strange exercises that I hadn't heard of and that had never occurred to me to try before. The two I have in mind are the kipping chinup and the jump chinup.

The kipping chinup is basically done by swinging your legs back and your chest/hips forward, then kicking forward and pulling up simultaneously. The idea is that you have to do as many as you can, and the dynamic swing makes it harder to control. It might be called a "cheat" by strict chinup-ers, but then again it's a really dynamic and different way to try the move.

The other one (jump chinups) are performed by standing under a bar, then jumping up, grabbing hold, and doing a chinup, then dropping down and repeating, again going for numbers not strict form.

Well the point of me starting this thread is to share weird/obscure exercises that you might do that other people might not have heard of.

Those two exercises are for beginners who can't perform multiple normal chinups. Crossfit uses them sometimes.

Yes.
If you want a more 'dynamic' exercise than pull-ups, try muscle-ups.

Those two are so not fucking weird and obscure, they're just what you do if you can't do a chinup, or what you do if you want to train endurance more but can't do a full rep strictly, like a drop set by cheating, which is fine.

Is it pistol or piston? I thought it was piston cause you were going down on 1 leg like a piston, but you do look like a pistol when you're down...

Is it pistol or piston? I thought it was piston cause you were going down on 1 leg like a piston, but you do look like a pistol when you're down...

Well they were new to me. And I can do good pullups so I don't really care if they're for beginners, they're a nice way to mix it up. And pistols kick ass.

And pistols kick ass.I agree, I can do good pullups too (even if only 3 before I can't touch the ceiling anymore) but I like using legs, it is fun. Pistols do kick ass, I still can't do them full RoM. I want to do it with kettlebells to depth like Mike Mahler, what a badass.

If anyone ever does it holding 2 beasts, they are god.
