About 13l of packed sand in there. I need to fill more bottles up, but then I have no idea how to get them on the (wooden) bar.

that's cool and everything, but I guess it only weighs like 20kg in total? I'd cover the lot in duct tape, since the string might not stay secure once they're being moved around.

If you're interested in some home-made weights then you could make some "conventional" odd objects, like a sandbag. Or can you find some big logs and rocks?
