View Full Version : Grace and Power, Two Aspects of Tricking

Hello, most of you don't know who I am, and that's fine. I've just decided to post some of my thoughts on tricking as a whole. This one being one of the major objects.
I've done thinking, and found a parallel between tricking and music. Music has attributes which are concrete, mathematical, and rational. However, it also has aspects on the other side of the spectrum. Things that are whimsical, intuitive, and ever-changing. And the pieces of music with a balance of both are those which are very well done. Therefore it acts as one of the few things which bridges the very wide gap between the two sides.
Tricking also seems to bridge another set of black-and-whites; Power and Grace (a.k.a. Fluidity). On the side of power, you get high flips, quick turn-arounds, and an aesthetic that seems near-intimidating (i.e. Jujimufu). On the side of Grace, you have smooth transitions, high kicks, and a flowey/mesmerizing appearance (i.e. Alex Sayhi). Again, once these two are bridged and balanced, you end up with a tricker who seems like they could do anything all the time (i.e. Anis Cheurfa).
Another thing I've discovered is that when training, I may train tricking combos like reverse crescent-aerial-aerial (more on the Grace side of things for me at least) I may plateau after a while. After which i switch to training my tumbling, which involves more power for me, and in this see-saw type of training, I make huge advances in both areas.
So after a while now, I've developed a style which feels to me as a nice harmony of Power and Grace with an appearance that I really like. Maybe this can give you some ideas as well.
p.s. Sampler coming soon

Oh my, I love it when people think about this kind of stuff! I've always drawn a parallel between tricking and the various forms and styles of the fine arts. Thank you for posting this <3

I've noticed that speed and quickness is what gives me the height. To me, power seems more like a low trick with speed that can break boards (i.e. ben brown) but speedy/ quick set ups with a stall gives the height. Don't know why but it seems like power is a low trick to me. Im not disagreeing with you about power, this is just how i see it.
anyone agree?

Well it's all about how said power is put to use. If you put a lot of power into a round-off on spring floor, than you go very high. If you go into a crouch, and throw a low/fast backflip from there, power is manifested as well.
