Hey guys,

I've been wandering around this site for quite a while, looking at techniques on tricks, how to train flexibility etc, and the other day at schl i had the courage to try and backflip :P (I had some friends around who trick to make sure i didnt kill myself, lol).
Unfortunately, I've had trouble making sure i go straight over, and instead i tend to go over my left shoulder, usually resulting in landing on my side / knees.

Any ideas on how to improve this?

P.S, I'm not completely new to the flexibility, martial arts thing, as i've been training in Karate for ~5 years. Hopefully that will help get me going :juji:

Edit: Fear isnt a problem, I was trying it in a sandpit usually reserved for longjump, haha

You might be throwing one arm back harder than the other. Also just keep practicing, the more confident you get at doing them the better they will get.

You also might be pulling one leg up harder than the other. Trying thinking about thrwoing your hps over instead of each leg individually.

most likely you are looking over you shoulder before your feet even leave the ground. you probably wont notice it. it doesnt have to much to do with pulling one leg harder then the other, cause when you take off of one leg and dont use the other at all, you gainer.

get a spotter or two, really understand all the motion and just keep drilling it.

Pretty much what white dragon said. Get a spotter that knows what he/she is doing and work the back flip dude. Just make sure to go straight back and use your arms as much as possible and remember knees to chest.

yeh.....probably looking over one shoulder...get someone to spot you, get them to check if you are looking over your shoulder when you do it, and if not...then its likely to be throwing one arm or leg harder than the other :)

What everyone is telling you is all true, all you have to do dont look back at all really your supposed to stay looking foward for as long as possible, and just keep drilling it it will fix its self eventually.
