Stall a bit, try to look forward on something slightly above eye level.
Minsets:
1) I'm going to execute it well coz I'm fking awesome.
2) I need to get my core (your body, place between abs and lower back) as high as possible while jumping straight up.
3) Reach the peak and swing knees over yourself

you don't really need to be able to jump high at all

no, you don't need a _really_ good vert, although it does help ofc. if you're landing in a crouched position, you're either:
a) not jumping properly, i.e. tucking too early or
b) underrotating, i.e. not tucking properly.
That's pretty much all we can say without a vid; check out Juji's tutorial on the main site if you haven't already, it explains everything very well. Upload a vid if you want more specific advice.

This is what i focus on doing for get maxium height in my backflip:

make sure u really pull those knees to the chin
arms need to STRAIGHT up, then grab the knees
its not important where you look but its important not to arch back!

do you have to be able to jump REALLY high to do this trick ??

actually my friend landed a really decent backflip while he only used his arms and didn't (try to...) jump at all...

Ok. Um, it would help if you had a video to show, because then I see what your doing wrong. But apart from that, theres a few things to keep in mind:

. You don't need to jump very high, to be honest, all you need to know is how to jump.

. The whole thing is about confidence, I personally believe that almost anyone cann backflip (unless of course they are retarded etc.) they just need the confidence to do it, so jumping high would help, of course, but its not necessary.

. Just practice, and try different things, like getting your core up.

. Try really using your arms, swinging them as high as you can.

Hope this helps.

Try and post a vid

Also:

do you NEED to learn this trick with a spotter ?

No. I didn't. I learned it on my own and got it on my first ever try. This is just living proof that you don't need to. BUT it would help. As I said earlier, I think learning this trick is all about confidence. And this would help confidence.

.no.

You dont need if you got balls, but for your own safety its best. Theres no reason to be dumb and act tough and do without if you have spotter who can help you! + He/she can tell you what you need to do better when you drill it!

I found a neat tutorial for backflips here http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1315875/backflip/

It had the spotting as normal, but had another drill I hadn't seen before where someone stands behind you and STOPS you from rotating by pushing you.

Basically, your shoulder blades should travel into them, but unlike just jumping backwards (which shouldn't be happening) your ass should be traveling away from them, not towards them.

This would be natural for men and lesbians to train in with a male spotter, since the last thing you want to do is thrust your ass towards a hairy black male capoerista.

i had the same problem as u when i first started. landing in a crouched position. that hurt my knees so much. but as i did them more i started landin upright more. so i guess just keep practicin man and get ur body used to it.
