Yeah, I pronounce it "Jee-roo" too, though sometimes I say "Giro", where the G has a strong sound. Itīs difficult to explain in text to non-english speakers, but I guess you get what I mean since portuguese and spanish are pretty much similar.

That+there's no "y" sound, depending on word it's pronounced differently. In fact, the way eddy pronounces it would be the same way in the word "synergy", to name an example. BOTH Ys in that word are pronounced differently than in "gyro" for example.
Languages where letters are always pronounced the same way ftw :)

Finnish, to name one. The only exception is when there's "ng" after eachother. We say it the same way for example you do. Other than that, finnish is ALWAYS pronounced EXACTLY as written.

Yet there's been 3 different ways of pronouncing from NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS in the thread so far. So even if all native speakers can't say it, is it any wonder that an african guy can't?

Just because they're native speakers doesn't mean they're not stupid.

But since you didn't use any specific post as an example it gave the image you were directing your comment at the thread starter, mister Eddy, and in my opinion it's reasonable enough that an african guy might not know how to pronounce an English word. I've no clue why I'm defending Eddy though. He's the source of all evil on earth.

I pronounce it "yee-roh" with a little roll on the "r". To me it is a delicious shwarma-like sandwich wrap that often includes souvlaki or seasoned beef.

..So if you were to write out some Finnish, i could just read it off and be speaking without problem? (obviously ignoring intonation and such)

No, because you have no clue how we pronounce the letters. But an "A" in Finnish is always pronounced the same way. In English there's atleast 3 different A's. Every letter is always pronounced the same way in Finnish, it doesn't matter what kind of letters there are before or after it. The only exception being the "ng", which is like you guys pronounce it :)

Noone cares about this Finnish faggotry.
It's pronounced freaking Gyro, gai-rooooo, gai which rhymes with I.
If you have an accent it will end up sounding a little different.
End of meaningless discussion.

Seeing that Ernest asked about it, it would seem he cares.
Now, last time I checked, if "Someone cares" is valid, "Noone cares" is invalid.
Stop pretending to be cool, Skilz.

well i don't get what you mean, and what this thread has to do with african guys.
let me tell you why i pronounce giro instead of gyro.
Like in every language in the world we all have vocals and consoants.
In portuguese we have 5 sounds of vocals
they are
a e i o u
and we just read as it is, i mean
ah eh e oh uh
and al the sound combined with the consoants are similar in sounds
i mean
ba we read bah.
the Gyro word doesn't exist in portuguese but exist the word Giro, wish is similar in written.
giro in english it means Spin, so i don't see why we can't talk giro once i'm on a country where every black guy speak portuguese.
i think you should respect more the culture of the others instead of call them stupid when u don't understand it a bit.

...never start arguing about the relationship between how things are spelt and how things are pronounced. You'll always run into shit.
Just decide on how something actually is pronounced and then leave it at that.
