View Full Version : A NEW TRICKING TERM!!!
Taimatsu
Jun-28-08, 09:04 PM
...now, this isn't any kind of Danny Perez TKT rant, about true kicks or anything. I just think it's an awesome new term that has universal terminology usage. It is only an identifying word to describe what side your tricking on.
BASICALLY if you are doing ANY trick on your opposite side, or your "bad" side, It would be considered to be a "DARKSIDE" trick.
"Doood! Did you see my friggin darkside jacknife!?!"
Cepopeye came up with it many moons ago, and I fell in love with it. Surprising I just thought of it again.
All in favor, say "I agree with Taimatsu!"
(Also works: "fuck yea, seaking!")
All opposed, say "I'm a nancy boy, with a cotton plug in my bloody hole"

and now we will get a bunch of threads about people worrying about darkside backtucks as soon as someone makes a misleading youtube video about it. =D

It's impossible to know what a trickster's natural tricking side is unless you know them. So a Darkside trick may be to the right, or to the left, depending on the person.
However it's still a cool idea. Here's an idea:
Lightside (a trickster that is right handed: Uses the right leg to kick in 540, uses right leg to swing into corks, uses left leg to hook, etc.)
Darkside (a trickster that is left handed: Uses the left leg to kick in 540, uses left leg to swing into corks, uses right leg to hook, etc.)
That way, when you meet a trickster you can ask what kind of trickster he is predominantly and he has a choice between lightside and darkside.
Of course that can also mean that a predominantly lightside trickster can have darkside tricks as well and vice versa...
I know this wouldn't solve the "bad side" thing, but I thought it's a cool idea and I should throw it out there.

My intention was to just hilight the second side that they learned the move on.
I understand what you're trying to say, because there's no way to tell if someone is tricking on their "darkside" and have credit due, unless the audience is JUST that damn observant, or the tricker simply announces it.
Despite that, I simply have a preference for the original intention.
It works with any exception (even my own). Despite my tumbling twisting, always going to the right, and my kicks having always been on the left, the technicality remains, that there is ALWAYS a darkside to my tricks (except backflips). So I, personally wouldn't fit into your categories.
....that, and I don't like categorizing trickers.

Wow...
Maybe it's just me, but I always figured people referred to an opposite side trick as "bad side" not because it's some forgotten, malnourished, vendictive child, but because it's uncomfortable, and generally, looks BAD. Darkside really implies that there's something special and forbidden about doing things on the opposite side. I'm just saying: I think it's a little bit ridiculous to go about creating new terms for old concepts that already have definitive labels. Call something darkside when you do a 1080 with your sith-powered lightsabre instead of kicking.

I'm down like syndrome with this idea.
I like the ring of it. I mean, bad side or darkside, it really refers to the same thing. However, to those who do a "bad side" move cleanly and nicely, it is true that it does give it a somewhat negative connotation. Darkside makes it special, because I believe that in all honesty, doing a move cleanly on your bad side IS special... just like every one of us...

Cicero's idea of categorizing tricksters is the same way snowboarders are categorized. Goofy and standard. However, there are many people that are right hand dominate and still do 540s with their left leg. Traditionally, all 540s were done with the left foot. So ~70% of us would be "goofy footed" tricksters.
ANYWAY:
I fully support the transition from "bad side" to "DARKSIDE".

Perhaps I was wrong!
I suppose i just heard cepopeye bring it up, then.
Either way, I likes the term.
Tricking has some badass names in general anyways. Some are deep rooted in the traditional martial arts, and others are just sharp and cool, like boxcutter, and snapauswipe.
...i do not, however enjoy the name "Kack roll". Blech.
