Im a pretty experimental guy, so i'm gonna try doing 50 backflips a day for 2 months and see if that does anything for my abs, at the end i will post before and after pics! Anyone care to join in?

If you wanted it to be a proper workout you'd have to do the backflips in a row and 50 in a row sounds hard

Or u could split them 25-25 1-2 minute rest between.

Not sure what it would do for your abs but it would make your backtucks amazing

No, you can do sets. And even rest a few seconds in between reps. Just like when people do deadlifts and hit the ground each time.

I don't think a picture is a great judgment of effectiveness since it more coms down to body fat visually.

I do think it would be a great workout though. It sounds hard though.

Goodness I might try this too. It should help my backflips tremendously and I can always use a good ab workout.

Jul-22-08, 09:44 PM
Haha, because deadlifts aren't a proper workout?

LukeTheNuke
Jul-22-08, 09:45 PM
I'm going to do 25 single backflips, rest 1-2 minutes, than Backflip->Backflip for the rest (yeah it adds up to 51 backflips, oh well) I will also post a video of backflips before and after

Of you could just do conventional ab work and not kill yourself.

This workout will prove to be ineffective.

The point of working out and strength/hypertrophy training is to apply resistance against a certain force or object, the force usually being gravity. As you get stronger/bigger your body obviously adapts to this load and therefore lifts it easier, and to continue progressing you need to add more resistance.

Doing back flips over and over is only going to build your aptitude for back flips. What nominal amount of ab strengthening it does provide will quickly diminish after your body grows accustomed to back flipping, because the same amount of resistance will always be applied every time you tuck.

It's like curling a 5 pound dumbell over and over again every single day. It becomes meaningless and remedial because your body easily adapts to it and thus it provides basically no stimulation to the muscles.

So yea, a proper workout regimen for your abs is what you need, all these back flips will only make you better at doing back flips.

it'll definately work man.

basically you'll just get more noticeable abs. When i first learned to backflip, within the first month afterwards my abs got alot more noticeable and stronger.

I tried this once. Basically I did backflips to failure, but only twice a week, not every day. I did this with a guy I train with, we took turns doing a backflip each; so essentially we had about 5 - 10 seconds between flips.
on the first day i managed about 20 before crashing
on the second i managed 32 and crashed on the 33rd
on the third i managed 15
then we stopped ^_^

tbh I didn't really notice a huge change in my backflips or ab strength, probably because the technique got sloppier after a few flips, and because I didn't do this for a long period of time.

Please post your results though, I'd be interested in knowing how this works out for you :pineapple:

Skilzat speaks the truth. After a certain point it will become useless.

Well, even though it may not work as an ab workout, it will definitely work something, lol. I'll post a video with before/after: abs, backflip, backflip->backflip, vertical jump, and maybe x-outs and flashkicks for the balls of it.

Jul-23-08, 09:35 AM
it would work better IMO if you mixed in backflip variations each day. like BHS, whips, flash, x-out, twists...

Dave C
Jul-23-08, 11:31 AM
I've been doing this for years. Yes it works, however, you have to realize that you can't JUST do backflips

If you want a full abdominal workout it should go something like

Tucks
Layouts
Chain backhandsprings
Chain whipbacks
Flashes (both sides)
Fulltwists (both sides)

Then you might have something

Edit: dammit kimby beat me to it

LukeTheNuke

Do you mean back fulls on both sides?

You could build your abs (and other muscles) by doing back tucks with weights on attached to your feet. I don't know how you would go about doing this but it would increase your tuck power and height in jumping. Be easier to do normal weights to increase strength though.

I remember my first session of back tucks after I learnt it....couldn't move the next day :/

Gymnasts do backtucks as conditioning, we do 20 sometimes at the end of a tumbling class. If you really want ab work do them open tucked(don't use hand to tuck).

So instead you diss the rest-pause method? :ogre:

-Envy-
Jul-23-08, 05:06 PM
A real set of deadlifts has to have pauses between the reps so that you aren't just bouncing the weight on each rep. It's called a DEADlift because you are lifting non-moving dead weight.

so i didn't get to do the backflips today cause it was raining and i had no place in my house to do it

Haha, because deadlifts aren't a proper workout? Not really, they are barely strenuous, I heard a story about a guy in prison who was deadlifting 4x his weight and then he fell asleep and when he woke up he had been raped in the showers.

I think 50 backflips a day alone will destroy your joints too, but idk. I think this is a good idea, not for the abs, but for backflips, so i might give it a try.:juji:

Haha I did like 10 backflips on Wednesday and then I got a sharp pain in my lower right abs. I think it was a mild tear because it hurt for a couple days, but is gone now. I may need to try working up to something like this as conditioning to prevent something worse from happening (also to make my backflips less crappy).

this sounds like something out of the ninja turtles... ? lol

Ashtar
Jul-26-08, 03:27 PM
I pretty much realized just now: the ninja turtles can't really do backbends because of their shells.

In fact, can they bend their spines at all? Do turtles even have spines? This fucking blows my mind guys.

I found a use for swiss balls. Aikido training! I will open an aikido dojo just so women will straddle these giant balls for me.
