I know that gymnasts typically only use calisthenics to strengthen themselves to hold planche positions. I never do bench press but was wondering if I did it would be good for planches, is it? Or should I stick with bodyweight excercises.

Gymnasts don't use calisthenics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calisthenics).
Moving on, planches are good for bench press, but not the other way around. You can do dumbbell planche and maltese presses (preferably in the hollow position or off a roman chair), however.

bench press has little carryover to planche
the best way to improve your planche is to do planches
practice frequently
