View Full Version : Height, good? Bad?

Is getting taller bad for tricking? I have a friend who's about 6' 4" and he can't do an aerial. I'm 5' 10" and still getting taller, and I'm wondering if this will be detrimental to my tricking. Or, will it be good? My legs will get stronger as I get taller and it could help me get more air.
Please share your experiences or thoughts, and I apologize if a thread like this already exists, I searched and couldn't find one so, oh well.

You really can't stop your growth unless you take drastic measures so worrying about whether or not it will hinder your tricking, which is only but a hobby of yours for the next few years, is meaningless.
With that being said there are plenty of tall tricksters.

What the previous poster said is that you should not try to stop yourself from growing. Its probably not healthy and most likely no one will let your or help you do it.
Now to actually answer your question yes. Taller bodies with a proportionately similar amount of muscle weight more. As for an aerial your body is like a bar and a longer bar is harder to rotate than a shorter one. Shorter bodies are also more efficient in some ways, the oxygen has less distance to travel and less cells to satisfy before it gets back around to the lungs as carbon dioxide.
However, take heart. Unless either of your parents are tall you'll most likely end up average height which is 5'10". I grew like crazy at first and was almost 5'9" in my early teens. Then I just stopped and ended up at 5'9" as an adult. So unless your mom or dad are really tall, or your dad is the pizza delivery guy you shouldnt get overly tall.

Steve terada is short, Anis is tall. Height has a negligible impact on tricking compared to factors from your genes or your training.
I advise to muss up though or else you will look like a skinny-tall-twig trickster whose tricking looks comparatively weak.

I'm 6'3" and i am progressing just fine. I also trick with kids shorter than me and they are doing around the same or aren't as good. As long as you try to bulk up a little like Konnar said you won't look like a twig and your tricks will become more powerful.

6'4" and tricking fine. Bubba's 6'2" and he's a beast. Don't worry about your height, things like that are just excuses for people who can't trick

Given the choice between being taller or being a better trickster, I'd take the taller option.

wtf? i always thought of bubba being small-medium height. lolz.
edit: as they all said height has no real impact on your tricks, dont let it effect you mentally.

Well, it has an effect on your tricking - Tall tricksters with long legs will probably have longer and smoother kicks and shorter tricksters will probably have some other kinda' advantages or disadvantages.

Thanks I'll start with that :) And I'm not going to take any drastic measures to stop myself from growing or anything. I just wanted some input on how getting taller would effect my ability to trick.

being tall is bad for gymnastics, not tricking so much.

im 6'3" and i am sick and tired of hearing "you're to tall to do a backflip!"... cause check it out; i am that tall and i can do a backflip.
dude it doesn't matter.
Your legs don't get stronger as they get longer ha ha, they get proportionately weaker. The reason Olympic gymnasts are all midgets is because their bones require far less torque to move (for an example of this look at an ant), making them faster and proportionately stronger. This is still irrelevant considering how far you'll probably actually get in tricking however, it only matters when you're trying to do quadruple layouts and shit.
In the meantime take up fencing and boxing and kill people

Last time I checked both tall people and short people had legs, so yer'know, maybe a little more work, but they can still both trick and taller people look AWESOME when they get good tricks.

I think tall people have to work a little harder to pull off tricks that a short guy might have an easier time with. But generally, taller trickers can potentially make their tricks look a little better than a short one because of extension in my opinion.
Is this some sort of reverse-manlet defense? Tricks don't look better with longer limbs, they look like floppy shit (Syvoran)
