View Full Version : Knee Injury...

So about 2 weeks ago I injured my knee tricking at the beach. I went to a physio who told me I had done a minor hyper extension and there was also some minor cartilage damage.

So the situation I'm in now is I try to wear my knee strap as much as possible unless Im just at home sitting down/sleeping. It doesn't hurt much to walk any more, I'm not limping but I feel very far from being able to do any physical activity. Also my knee seems to almost constantly have fluid built up in it.

I do some light little stretch where I let my knee flow through its range of motion but what else should I be doing to help? Especially with the fluid. Ice, heat? I'm unsure, any advice is much appreciated

Ice, heat will only make it worse. Don't wear your knee strap all the time, start to take off while your working otherwise you'll become dependent on it and your knee will be weaker than the other. Range of motion exercises is all you can really do until you feel confident enough to add resistance.

Oh but if I don't wear it by the end of the shift I'm limping, plus then I have to walk home... Ok so ice as much as possible? Or like, 20mins off and 20 on? Something like that. Thanks for your input man.

Your injury deals with parts of your knee that lack blood flow, it is going to take a long time to heal.

If there is no swelling present I do not see the purpose of ice but that is just my opinion. The injury already lacks blood flow so icing it will only deprive it more.

This is bad news :(. Umm there is always a lot of fluid in it, as in it's swollen a lot with a build up of fluid.

Actually right now it's the smallest it's been.. When I'm sitting and straighten it out I feel for fluid there's only a little on the sides. When I stand up though it gets more like 'jelly' and there seems to be a build up around the bottom corner and opposite top corner..

Im thinking of going to another physio later this week [when I get paid]. But I guess it might just be a case of having to wait ages

Icing it is going to help reduce the swelling and also the pain. Ice for about 20mins then wait around an hour, then ice it again if you need to. Using this method will cause the pain to be reduced while the ice is there and when it has been taken away, blood will rush to the area taking away the swelling and bringing the necessary components of healing to the area.

If you have cartilage damage and there is a lot of swelling present then good luck.

if all you have is cartilidge being born then you're in a not so bad shape unless you've torn a ligament or somethin more serious. the best thing to do is ice for 15-20min thenw ait a few hrs then do so again. You should also start doing very light workouts to strengthen the knee. Don't push yourself to do more than you can handle bc you'll just cause more damage to th eknee which is somethin you really don't want to happen.

I had my knee scoped earlier this year in order to remove some damaged cartilage. Ever since then I have been doing what rom exercises I am able to without causing pain, and I have worked my way up to some weighted movements. My physical therapist has had me doing straight leg raises, in many directions, with ankle weights, also limited range squats and lunges, as well as some lateral movements and calf raise variations. Do what you can to keep it moving but don't do any more damage, and don't make it hurt. Icing the area has helped me quite a bit, usually icing on and off for 20 minutes each as much as I can. Some type of menthol cream like tiger balm aslo helps significantly. I have been massaging the scar tissue as much as possible, but I don't know if massaging the area on your knee would help with the fluid situation or just make it worse.

Haha trace you're the man <3  One day I better get lucky with those magic fingers .

Thanks for all responses guys.. I think I might need to know how serious the cartilage damage and stuff is especially if i want an estimated time of recovery. Think I will visit another physio soon when I get paid or if I save up some moolah.
