for me i practiced my tornado kick alot to get it really high, and i just learned to throw my arms and into it then bam, i got 540s off both sides

focus on turning your hips, keep in mind it's a roundhouse, not a crescent kick. Also remember to jump straight up.

The main thing that turned my tornado kick into a 540 was all in the nonkicking leg. Most people tend to bring it up bent and not that high. I was that way forever. Then I stumbled across a really old clip of Kelly Magovern doing one and noticed just how high and straight he brought his nonkicking leg up.
I emulated it a few times and all of a sudden it clicked. The principle is that it sets your whole body up higher and the higher that leg is, the more time you have for your kicking leg to get around and land. Plus it generally looks cooler.
Another thing I adapted later to really make my 540 consistent was actually chambering the kick properly. I was doing it very straight legged for a while and sorta flinging it around. After I learned to chamber and extend it out it became faster and much better-looking.
Both of those are things I'd recommend for anyone still struggling with it or to improve your current one.

As juji said, the 540 kick is NOT a mental trick. It isn't complicated and advanced, and it isn't the most physically demanding trick. You just have to remember the key points such as the dig, the lift, executing a correct round or cresent kick, kicking through the target and the turning of the hips, and tucking the leg. Actually, a correct 540 and tornado should have the feeling that you are going to automatically tuck the non kicking leg or land on the kicking leg because of the amount of power and speed that SHOULD come with a 540 kick. If you have a good 540, you should have to force yourself to land on the non kicking leg when doing tornado kicks.

I used to concentrate all my energy on the turn with my arms... instead of the dig and the hips going up... so I turned fast but extremely low.... I read the tut from juji... again.... where I saw the way he digged and puts his hips up... first try after reading that I digged before thowing up my arms and I got a good 540 right away... I hated myself for not thinking about this earlier

I learnt 540 pretty quickly, focused on chambering the other leg, then rest came in turn

to me,.
the 540 clicks overtime,
it gets better everytime,
its like when i realise i have to dig more, i got more height,
then i realise my chambering, i got more speed,
and then the arms and so on.....
so drill them,
you'll discover new techniques so called ' click'

First time I actually landed a 540 that felt satisfactory, it was probably about hip height. I just kept drilling it and it kept getting higher and higher. That's how I got it! Don't worry about getting it high to land on the kicking leg. Just drill it low until it gets higher and higher and you should get it!
Lol.. my 540 clicked when i added this minor detail...
i watched a backside 900 tut and he said "Remember to twist your nonkicking foot to automaticly turn your hips" i though "meh i'll try that in a tornado.." *540's* ... "WTF?! did i just 540?!?!? YAY :D"

I actually got 540 before i knew was a tornado was lol, What made it click... When someone pointed out to chamber my other leg then it actually looked half decent!

well when i 540 my penis hitting my thigh does make a sort of clicking noise, but thats about all the clicking there is in a 540.

A setup...
I had previously just stood, lifted up the non-kicking leg and followed with a kick over it. Other times I would hold my non-kicking leg in the air, bring it down to thump the ground and then throw it back up and into the 540. This "worked" and I was able to 540, but I couldn't feel confident in the move until I started doing a small step-in setup.
Throwing my arms fucking hella up like crazy is one thing that made my meh 540 into a decently ok 540

I just did my first 540 kicks :D
it actually happened after I started learning the Russian national anthem on guitar XD.
no seriously,just keep drilling your tornados and trying 540 sometimes,plus,there is a good tip of twisting your nonkicking leg's ankle.
i just did it one day after alot of falling, i kick it out and then just slammed my leg down and i did it, it sucked, and it was like that for a bit and tehn some adjustments to my tech got made and it was better. but i didnt have anything that actually made it "click" i just did it one day.

Hey this thread is nice. I haven't managed to achieve a 540 kick because I didn't analize it as some of you guys have done... After my exams I will go practice it...

There are technical adjustments that make a difference but in the end the 540 is mainly about one thing and one thing only. Practice. Drill drill DRILL and your body will become conditioned to the point of being able to do it.
