I used to do all my hook> moves with a standing hook rather than a spin hook. (When I did spin hooks..) I had no idea when or where my target was in the hook and I didn't know when to snap the kick or re-chamber. Also, the spin always made me confused as to where I was in the next move.
standing hooks definitely helped me to learn how to transfer the hook for momentum as well as just learning how a hook kick works.
If I had gone straight to spin hooks I might have ended up just doing a spinning leg flail/exaggerated btwist leg toss

i really should practice them a lot more, however im kind of disapointed in my own, as they are like waist height :\
i suppose i'd have to stretch, or can i just keep doing them and they will get higher??

I hate you.
I've been working on my kicks and flexability seriously for a couple of weeks. It sucks that when I had the flexability I never bothered to learn them proper - boy how I have changed.

the best thing my good hook kick is the opposite way i do all my tricks haha
i'll post mine at some point this week.
*edit*
i dont actually think much of JCVD's hook kicks. The foot position on all his kicks are exactly the same: poor.
if you freezeframe all his kicks, you wouldnt know whether he's doing a crescent, round or hook.

Yeah, I agree - his non kicking leg points in the wrong direction haha.

It can't really be though as alot of JCVDs kicks are technically not as good as Ben browns or Chris Dee's. If you watch that video on his standing hooks and even spinning hooks, he doesn't follow through with his hip, his knee stops before the target and his footshape is a little off(usually pointing upwards)
Preference is one thing but really your saying you prefer it done the wrong way...

His flexibility is pretty good, but they weren't really proper hooks. They were almost side kicks done crooked. Kind of. I agree basically. USELESS POST!

its never a useless post when its pointing out how bad JCVDs kicks are.
He was pretty much no power in them.

JCVD's kicks have as much differentiation as Steven Segal's facial expressions.

I have a real problem with side kicks, I'm certain that its becasue my flexibility isnt very good but sometimes it feels like my hips arn't right. Perhaps their placement in the kick.

make sure the heel of your base leg pivots towards the target when you kick. this usually fixes hip alignment. =)
also, side kicks take a lot of work haha. gratification only comes with time. you'll get em good if you keep it up.

absolutely.
a good side kick is hard to get right unless you've got a very good example to follow and are shown how to do it well.

in true martial arts form a side kick should always come out parallel to the ground, seeing as a real chamber and extension of the side kick can only go straight out for maximum power.

The foot or the leg? Cause the toes of the foot should be slightly or 45 degrees pointing downward otherwise it looks gay if the toes point upwards.
I don't have beautiful side kicks myself because I always forgot to train them. Anyways enough excuses, here's my hooks which suck:
