A friend of mine and I both had the same injury, but the reaction to the each injury was extremely different.

Recently while I was warming up for a karate demonstration, I fell straight down on my knee, hard. My knee-cap popped out out when I hit the ground, and snapped back in when pressure was taken off of it. All my instructor did was drag me to the wall, put some ice on it, and said to come back next week

My friend had the same exact injury while playing sports (her knee popped out when she fell). But she went to the hospital and had MRI's done and had to stay off of it for around a month (it might have been more, but I don't remember).

Which reaction to the injury was correct? Should I have gone to the hospital or was the reaction my friend got too strong?

Well, did either of you suffer any lasting damage from the injuries?

Oddly enough I didn't, but she went out and injured herself as soon as she was able to play sports again. Now her injury is chronic.

But the injuries were the same at first

Are you more conditioned than her? Perhaps her's was worse. Just because the same thing happened does not mean it's the same injury.

Yeah, just because you both had a booboo on your knee, doesn't mean they were the same injury.

Very true. We are both atheletes, but I am slightly more conditioned than she is.

We are both the same age, but she only does JV soccer and Lacrosse. I do martial arts and tricking in addition to Varsity Wrestling and Ultimate Frisbee.

I guess the answer is that the right thing happened in both cases. I got the necessary treatment and so did she.

If her injury is chronic, she did not receive the treatment she needed.

Yeah your sports are more intense than hers, and on top of that you do tricking and martial arts. Plus she is a woman. You are obviously built much more resistant to injury than her.

It only became chronic after the second time she injured it. After the second injury she had surgery. Despite the surgery she still has a very minor knee injury that hurts her occasionally

Agreed on both parts
