I found that if I hold a stretch for maybe 30 seconds, take a small break, and then try it again, I get huge gains. Particularly with sidesplits. Anyone else share this experience?

I thought I would mention this because I haven't really seen a lot of people using this approach to their stretching--they just hold a stretch for like 10 minutes, which I think is ridiculous. My legs get sore and cramped up and painful if I stretch for over a minute.

Interesting thing you mention, but please:
TAKE THE INJURIES OFF YOUR SIG! they friggin' scare me! >____<
Or at least add that you are a hopeless retard, so we others don't have to worry about that.... :D

But I'm gonna try out that stretching method. Maybe I will share the results...if there will be any, that is.

i did that method and when i warm up i see lots of improvement ...but it takes to much time to gain really great flexibility .....

personaly i do dynamic stretches to warm up..... then i do your method .....and finally ...5 sets of Isometrics for side splits and front splits .....

and i see lots of improvement...when i try to splits cold ....

P.S - Sorry the english

Oh yea, I should have posted about this. A DVD I have called "The Secrets of Stretching" explains that your muscles and tendons will naturally resist your trying to stretch them past their mental limits. However, if you hold a stretch for something like 30sec while actively forcing your muscles against the stretch (i.e. a side splits at your furthest extension while simultaneously using just your leg muscles to try and close your legs and lift your body up) and then slowly release the tension by getting up, walk it off for a few minutes to give your muscles a chance to regain stamina. Now try it again, you'll notice you can bring your legs into a deeper stretch than you previously had been able to. This is because the act of you actively trying to force against the stretch, your subconscious has slightly forgotten the mental limit it set on your muscles and tendons, and has to reset those limits. Lastly, now that your muscle/tendon fibers have naturally lengthened slightly do to their use, the mental limit is now a bit further than when you first started.

I know I make the explanation really wordy...so if you get a chance, look for this DVD. I simply downloaded it.

It shouldn't take that long to get into a side split. And this is what most people do for normal static stretching. Isometrics should be done first, static after the muscles are fatigued.

Dude, in practice you are kind of right, but you have the science of what's happening here completely wrong.

Yea, you're probably right. It's been a while since I watched the DVD and heard how it should be worded.

you should hold your streaches for 4 mins each at least. - sources my mom worked as a physical trainer and a track coach

Show me someone who does that and has exceptional (or even decent) flexibility.

I have decent flexibility.
