I've read litle things now to do with stretching where people say not to overly stretch in a session beyond what you should do for that session, because it creates scar tissue.

If such is true, how come in certain places they will force students into the splits or really push people into becoming flexible?

What would be so bad about the scar tissue?

I know I am poorly educated haha, but this topic has bothered me for a while now and I trust in the knowledge of certain TT members :]

Overstretching can cause muscle tears. Slight tearing is okay, microtears and stuff are the cause of hypertrophy after all, but the problem with ballistic forcing into new RoMs is it has a risk of doing it beyond healthy tearing to a point of tearing large sections which may not heal properly.

Really pushing people to become flexible is okay, some people can handle more stretching than others so they're okay with it. Usually you see this with chinese children or something. I think you can avoid injury like that when you're younger because your tissues are more pliable or something. Also, they probably train harder so they're better warmed up than most people are.

Scar tissue isn't the end of the world because it can be broken up. It's just really annoying. Like, if you get a needle in your vein, and it scars over, the next time they inject the needle there it hurts a lot more because there's a knot of vein tissue to push through this time.

Scar tissue is bad because it is not pliable, and it doesn't do anything. It is a stop-gap of rapid healing which saves your life because it is quick to make, but once you're out of the danger zone, it would be ideal that it were replaced with healthy tissue.

I'm not sure scar tissue is the issue at hand here though, it's more muscle tearing which is the complaint rather than scar tissue... and you don't need an explanation on why that's bad.

Once you have scar tissue you realize how much of a pain in the ass it is.

Over stretching is different from tearing a muscle that leads to scar tissue. Maybe I am wrong, but slight over stretch is like a over lifting weight. A serious over stretch is like a serious muscle straight.
Also how would you know if you had scar tissue?
