I just recently bought my first big-ass bucket of whey protein and I'm not quite sure when I should take it in relation to my workout. I'm also concerned about the possibility of getting fat instead of bulky. How intense should my workout be, when should I take my protein, and should I take it with high- or low-calorie beverages or foods?
take it pre and post
how intense the workout should be depends on what your workout is for

Take an amount regardless how intense your workout is. Too much protein won't kill you, you'll just shit it out. But it can be a little waste of money if you overdo it.

My workout thus far is as follows:
To start each workout, I do some light stretching, then run a mile.
Afterwards:
5 sets, 10 reps bench press, 150 lbs.
3 sets, 10 reps lat rows, 100 lbs.
5 sets, 20 reps quad extensions, 100 lbs.
5 sets, 25 reps hanging crunches
3 sets, 20 reps shoulder shrugs, 65 lbs. per arm
That's all I really do consistently. Sometimes I do some military presses. sometimes I do pull ups and push ups. sometimes I do bicep curls. The gym I'm working with is pretty limited as far as the equipment goes. My diet is shoddy. I don't really eat consistently, just whenever I get hungry, and just whatever's around.

Toss it into cooking, snort it and make shakes.

You should consider doing a better routine. You'll likely get much better results with a routine that focuses on 1-2 major muscle groups a day.
Theres a near cult like a following for Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength, might want to give that a try. Personally, I use MAX OT and I've got great results with it. Best of all, its free! www.ast-ss.com for more info.
Far as the shakes go, when I did my research I came up with 1-2 hours before, and within 30 minutes after. However, if you have to to just do one, it seems that the post workout shake is best.

Need some squats and/or deadlifts.
Can't work the quads and not the glutes.
And why shoulder shrugs? You want those phat upper traps?

I get my glut workout from back extensions. It really burns my ass more than my lower back. It's not really a steady part of my workout, I just throw them in their whenever. However, I do work my hamstrings a bit.
read up on the stickies and etc. you need compound movements. read about the rippetoe program.

You should take it long before you workout. Make sure not to take it anywhere near your workout, especially after or the effects of the whey will diminish.
Also, whey is known to make you fat, no matter how much you workout so you're just going to have to deal with it's fatty qualities and tone your body later.
As for your workout it should be light weights, high reps.
I'd also recommend very low calories food and beverage consumption, preferably just two meals a day. No more.
One of those meals should be your whey ONLY.

Well it looks like you're not a beginning at weightlifting, so i suggest the 5X5 WORKOUT!
http://www.geocities.com/elitemadcow1/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm
Also, you can take Whey any time of the day. If you have a blender, and you're in a rush, you can make a quick meal out of it. Put Oatmeal, milk, Whey, fruit, and you're good to go. I normally took mine post-workout, because i don't have $$ for whey, but it also works well before morning, snack, before bed, etc etc.

Yes this is what you should be doing. I used a plan similar to this and had HUGE gains which was pure muscle and no fat basically. You don't need to eat a lot to make gains, just whey and maybe 1-2 more meals equaling about 1750 calories. Also very low weight with huge amounts of reps is the ideal whey to go.

Also, the only exercise you need for your legs is running. Make sure to run a lot, like 8-10 miles per day. This combined with the 1700 calorie diet of nothing but whey will pack on slabs of muscle.

When we say light weight high reps we mean it too, the only reason weight is limited mostly to about 12 reps is due to peoples lazyness. If you had the patience to do like 1000 curls with just your hands your biceps would be huge.

I've actually done assisted curls before, where I used a rubber band to help pull my arm up, so that I could do more reps with a weight even lighter than my hands alone.

lol @ Swartz & 540Ninja! Hahahaha.
I remember when I first bought some whey,I was so excited! Until I realised how overrated it was.
I find that real food works a lot better post-workout.
Get a tonne of calories down your throat & whilst doing so,read around the forums & give teh net a browse.
What're your goals?

I don't really have a set in stone goal, which is probably my first mistake. My general goal is to increase my muscle mass while lowering my body fat percentage. I clearly have no idea what I'm doing, which has been made blatantly clear to me. Unfortunately, I don't have any access to weights that I can use for squats. I might just fill a backpack full of books or something. The gym in my apartment complex is comprised only of machines (which means all my stabilizer muscles are atrophied into nothingness,) with one body weight structure which contains a pull up bar, some handles for dips or leg lifts, and some handles to do push ups with. I've checked up on the Mark Ripptoe program, and it seems pretty solid.

I exploded into laughter when I read this hahaha.
I don't know why, but I actually fell out of my chair laughing, and I'm not being sarcastic.

Advice for Eggo: In the future, don't buy something without knowing how it works and how/when you should take it.
That said you should still go by the plan I mentioned if you're serious about getting ripped and buff!
