View Full Version : More Tricking Theory

I was thinking about tricking theory during biology today as there was nothing else to do, and I began wondering about the speed people learn there tricks.

I think that it can be broken down into four categories

1. Learning tricks quickly and then progressively or exponentially slowing down

2. Learning tricks slowly and then progressively or exponentially speeding up

3. Learning in chunks (i.e. learning multiple tricks at once in spaced out sessions)

4. Learning at more or less the same speed throughout your tricking career

Personally, I believe it depends on your background. Someone with no martial arts or gymnastics background might learn at the same speed throughout there tricking career, whereas a martial artist who gets into trickin might learn quickly and then slow down.

Or is it completely dependant on how often you train? Somone who only tricks once a week or so might learn in chunks, whereas someone who tricks every other day might learn at a steady progressive rate.

I fit into category four, I learn at a steady rate with occassional bursts. However, it is evened out by the fact that I have droughts in my "new trick learning"

What category do you fit in, and why do you think so? And do you think that it is dependant on background, training schedule, or both?

::EDIT::

before I started to watch samplers for real my progression was much lower than it is now(after I started watching sampler). Visual training!

That's another good point. Visual training needs to be incorporated into learning. And as you said it effected yours, anyone else?

Rudy has progressed fast as a motherfucker for pretty much ever. Except for like a small plateau or two that didn't last more than a couple weeks at most. lol.

I can be categorized as #3. This is not always the case as some tricks take a while to learn, but in a matter of 2 days I learned corks, 540's and c7's. Well actually, I worked on them for a while, but started landing them within 2 days, so maybe #2.

I think it is pretty dependent on the amount of training you have and how often you train. I only get to train about 2 times per week, giving me a lot of rest in between (well, a rest from tricking, other days I will be weight training or conditioning for kung fu)
so when I do trick, I usually learn a lot at once.

However, I don't think there is a definite answer to this, everyone is different and they learn at different speeds for multiple reasons. As for visual learning, I think it's very important. Once I see a trick performed enough, it's almost as if I know I can do it, I just have to coordinate my body to do what my mind already knows.

tricking is whatever I want it to be.

My progression is primarily mental for me, being in better shape helps, but when i really start noticing things, learning new stuff and things really start to sink in is when i progress.

That's it? Someone else must have an opinion

Learning in chunks would increase the average speed of your learning though

For myself, I can already visualize and feel the technique of a trick so I basicly know how to do it in my head lol. When I want to learn how to actually execute the trick, it's just a matter of physically training my body so I can do the trick. I bet if my body was able to do any trick I wanted, and I've never done it before, it probably wouldn't take me very long to get the trick. But unfortunately I do not have that body and it will probably take a very long time to get. And by the time I get that body my joints might be too old for tricking
