Hello, guys.

Here's the thing: I have stretched in over 250 days every day and sort of got an addiction to stretching. The problem is that yesterday I strained my left groin when I pushed myself too hard. Today just a few minutes ago I had my 60min stretch routine and it hurt like hell. I still did the whole routine but sometimes I screamed in pain. What should I do? I don't want to get unflexible and quit the stretching. I have a goal to stretch 365 days straight and I wanna keep it.

Help!

Yuri

holy crap, why would you stretch for 60 minutes? and why would you do this while you are screaming in pain

stretching is not that hardcore, and it is not worth risking injuries for. The general rule is in 2-3 months you can reach the maximum flexibility your genetics allows for. after that it is just maintaining it which you really do not have to do that much for.

you should not have to stretch for an hour a day for a whole year

if you cannot stretch without screaming in pain you may want to take some time off heavy stretching. apply your energy towards another discipline for the time being

Squats & Milk have been helping maintain my current flexibility. I'd like to get my side splits back sometime soon. & yes,Hobzet, you should take a break from stretching you nutter. How flexible are you?

Yuri
Dec-10-08, 12:39 PM
you really don't have to stretch that much. you are wasting your time
you could be a lot more efficient in your training, what the hell, noone stretches for an hour a day

are you trying to get into contortion?

I haven't done any flexibility training in a couple years and can still do a cold sidesplit

Hobzet

This is how flexible I am today. I know it is nothing special but my muscles is extremly slow!

Unless you want to get oversplits you should be able to maintain your flexibility just by kicking/ tricking... it takes quite a while to lose a significant amount of flexibility

if in 2-3 months you can reach the maximum flexibility your genetics allows , how do some people ( like me for example ) do the fucking side splits ???? if our genetics don't allow us to do the splits ......???? how we train ???
My Teacher has told me that is always possible to do side splits at my age ( 17 years old ) ...and i also did the Thomaz Kurz test for the splits and i can do 2 angles of 90 degress ........but ....i don't know xD

You have scared me with the words " the maximum flexibility your genetics allows"

Yuri
Dec-11-08, 12:19 PM
haha, don't take it too literally

almost everyone can get sidesplit, but sometimes there are limiting factors, like hip bones being in the way

but some people are genetically inclined to be more flexible and have greater than the average range of motion

Spekk
Dec-11-08, 01:41 PM
oh uff ......after wrote that , i did the test again with the chairs xD ......i can do more a less 100 degrees with each leg ....and without warm up ...i guess my genetics allow me to do the splits if i train hard :D

Well as long as you feel a stretch, presumably your muscles are limiting your range of motion...

Hm, one might think "try front split for a while to see if it hurts less, while your adductors (groin) heal" or somethin'.

It's obvious that you're injured. You can proactively recover or you can re-injure yourself every day. It's up to you.

And to those people freaking out about an hour stretch session: really it's not that uncommon. As a trainer I often take my clients through a 60 minute AIS session as an alternative to their resistance or cardiovascular training session. Get out of the mindset that you're holding stretches for minutes at a time, and you'll figure it out.

it just seems excessive to me to stretch for an hour, especially every day for a year

sean, what type of people do you train? athletes? regular joes?

I agree with this statement 100%.

sean, what type of people do you train? athletes? regular joes?

Like he said above as an alternative for a resistance/cardio session. I do this every two weeks with some of my clients... They love it, some of them once a week depending from client to client and wether they are average joes or not.

Well as long as you feel a stretch, presumably your muscles are limiting your range of motion...

Its not the muscles that limit the range of motion, but genetics and obviously golgi tendon organs...But there are ways of stretching to get past the latter by eg doing some PNF Stretching.

i.e., I'm right? (olololol?)

I just meant that if you feel a strerch (in the muscle), you've probably not reached your anatomical limit.

And don't forget the muscle spindles!

it just seems excessive to me to stretch for an hour, especially every day for a year

sean, what type of people do you train? athletes? regular joes?

I train athletes and regular joes. I don't think it's excessive to stretch for an hour, and actually many times I find an hour cuts my assisted stretch session short. Doing an hour long stretch session every day for a year could be excessive unless it's controlled and gradually enhanced, which I'd guess is not the case since he's screaming in pain . I mean, there are people who do yoga practically every day of their adult lives and they're some of the healthiest and most flexible people in the world.

Just think differently about stretching and you'll see how it can take a while. Like, I stretch distal to proximal and superficial to deep. So I'll stretch the hamstring insertion points, and then I'll do a totally different stretch for the origin. You can even isolate biceps femoris and the semitendinosus/semimembranosus adductor complex by simply externally or internally rotating the hip before the stretch. Hamstrings alone can take 15-20 minutes. Then you have the illiotibal fascia, the glut medius, glut max, adductors, etc, lower erector spinae, and while they're supine you can stretch their capitis and multifidus muscles in their back by assisting a chin-tuck, etc. Then they go prone and you work their quads, psoas, etc. Then they can sit upright, and you can stretch their pec major, minor and anterior delts, then their triceps and biceps, lats, rhomboids, traps, scalenes, etc. This is just all off the top of my head dude. 10x 1-2 second reps per muscle or per stretch if there are multiple stretches per muscle like the hams and quads. Hope that helps clarify how stretching can take a while.

Dec-13-08, 04:49 PM

thank you

jan
Dec-13-08, 07:34 PM
10x1-2 second stretches? That seems short.
I've always followed the guideline of never stretching less than 30 seconds, but never more than 2 minutes at a time before resting. Worked wonders for me, at least.

I think it's more proper to say when you 'train' them. Technically they're 'recruited' the second you spend your minerals and vespene gas (100/50 isn't it?) and 2 supply to begin the training, and when they pop out of the barracks fully trained that's when they say it.
