Ok guys, you might have seen some of my 540 threads in the past but this time I am coming to you about a question about the cheat setup. I can only perform running 540 kicks due to the fact that I never get enough momentum and speed to perform a 540 kick standing. I think that this is because I have a problem with the cheat setup. Contrast these 2 styles based on how I have described them and see what I need to do to make the transition to a cheat setup.
Running Cheat 540:
I use the run up to gain a massive amount of speed and momentum then I use blocking technique to get more height to give me time to perform the kick and bend my leg under to land. I also have enough speed to give my body enough torque to twist the kick across as opposed to the cheat setup. My landing can sometimes be a bit unsteady but there is never much problem.
Standing Cheat 540:
I can’t seem to get enough height with this to give me time to throw the kick and pull the non-kicking leg in. I turn around slightly and then using my arms, I throw the non kicking knee up and then bring the leg over. (I want to try to throw the kick lower and more across but my leg seems to always go in the crescent kick motion instead of a roundhouse kicking motion.) I usually never get much height because of my inability to jump using this setup.
While my tornado kicks are great, my Cheat setup 540 requires more work before I can land. If you have had similar problems as me can you tell me what is needed to do to fix this. Please help soon.

well try to "caper" in your setup ( don't know if that's the right word for it but notice it :

I like to torque my hips in the standing set up to get enough power to drive my leg over. Chambering your kicking leg on the way up also helps it explode a bit when you reach your target. I think "chamber" was what broertjetim meant to say.

Running is for super crazy insane wushu athletes that can kick people in the head and spin twice before landing :pwing:

I usually never get much height because of my inability to jump using this setup.
While my tornado kicks are great
Looking at this two quotes you will recognize, that you just analyzed your problem by yourself. We can't really help you on your cheat setup anyway without a vid, because we've never seen it, hence don't know what you're doing wrong/ aren't doing at all.
When I was learning 540s I first started drilling tornados (out of boredom because I couldn't train anything else on that time because I was injured) and hoped that they would eventually evolve into 540s, but all I got were low, forced and ugly 540s that hurt on the landings. The problem was that I didn't understood how I had to jump in the 540.
Once I thought about it, I realised that I was only placing my forefoot on the ground which totally cut my height.
I don't know if that's your case too, because you didn't post a vid, but I recommend you try to really place your whole foot on the ground and really jump.
If you do that and just do a strong tornadokick, you'll just land on the kicking leg and have a 540. Because after all a 540 is not much more than just a high tornadokick.
For your idea about kicking lower and more upright I would recommend you to just let the kick find it's way, otherwise it will most likely result in just pulling the leg around and underneath you, and will look nothing like a kick.
My first 540s I was comfortable with were a fair bit layed back too, because that was what felt natural and comfortable. Once you can do it, your 540s will evolve anyway, and you'll learn to do the layed back version as well as a more upright version.
Another thing I first had problems with was that my upper body didn't turn and blocked my kick, so that it was impossible for me to kick all the way through. But that was when I had just started drilling tornados, and since you say you have good tornados I thing you already do that part right, but ya know, it never hurts to mention something that could might help.
I have to admit that I really suck at kicks, and when you say your tornados are good, they're probably far better than mine, because they always feel kinda awkward to me. But I think my 540s are quite ok (I can give you the link to a vid of my 540s if you want.) I hope no one get's me wrong on this one, I'm not claiming at all that my 540s are good or anything, I just say, that they aren't totally shit either. They're like the only kick I can actually do without looking totally retarded.
I hope this helps you at least a little bit, after all I'm just sharing what I could remember from when I was learning 540s, because your problem sounds a little similar to mine.

here is the link to a little fun vid we made from the last 2 sessions, it's nothing great, just goofing around and having some fun, but there are some 540s of me in there so I guess it will do.

and this is our sampler of this year, if you want a general overview

Your kicks are great. I thought that they would be like some of the really desperate low 540s. I figure that mine will look like yours once I get it. I'm waiting for a new camera so that I can film some of my attempts.

I think you might need to:
-step over more before you jump
-torque your upper body across more before kicking in your standing 540.
This is because the running setup makes you cheat a little bit. But this is based on common problems I've seen from people switching between the two setups; I haven't seen a vid so I really wouldn't know.
Hope it helps anyway!
