ok, i saw on here one of the basic tricks is a backflip, and for a while i wanted to learn, so i want to learn it first. the thing is that i can get the rotation, and i got it fully once(i was doing this on a trampoline btw didnt bounce before the flip) but i jumped back ALOT. i have a friend that can do a backflip, and he keeps telling me just jump straight up and tuck, but when i do that, i get like no flip at all and just land on my back, and i look like an idiot. am i supposed to swing my arms behind me? or do i swing them up and sort of lean back? please help because i REALLY want to get into tricking. thanks

ok i had this exact same problem as you for a long time
i found out that you gotta jump so that your body is fully off the ground then backflip, another major point for me was to NEVER throw my head back, try to keep looking forward as long as possible
i hope this helps

no camera atm. how exactly would i make myself flip though? would just tucking do it? ive gotten it jumping straight up once, but i barely rotated, and i have no clue what i did to land it. o yea another thing, is it normal for your abs to hurt after trying backflips?

do backward rolls on the floor really fast? and yes, abs get sore from backflips.

IMO is just the problem with tucking. When I was learning this it was as chance by 50/50 whether I would land it or face tucked it :D
And it's all in tucking, jump, imagine pulling your knees over your head (that means kick them up) and the rotation will do it.
And from that it should feel easy, no pain, no arched back.

when tucking remember to bring your knees to your chest and have your hips follow your knees. DO NOT bring your chest to your knees. that won't help at all.

and when u jump STRAIGHT up remeber to stall but not 4 TOO LONg. that can help u land on ur face. :)

but my simple steps r

1.Jump up with arms over head
2. when ive stalled enough pull knees and lean backward.

its easier from a roundoff with me.

Don't look back, it kills the height. As Juji says, it's a blind-entry move :)

DO NOT EVER THROW YOUR HEAD ON A BACK TUCK. Its about the only way you can actually land on your head while doing this move. Keep your head neutral or even better tucked into your chest. All the backwards rotation comes from throwing your arms in a 180 degree arc and tucking your knees to your chest (not you chest to your knees) after you have jumped strait up. Also relax, trust yourself and physics this is a basic move for a reason. As long as you think and go UP and not back, use your arms, and tuck even half way decently you will land at the worst on your knees.

PS. Tumbling (from a gymnastic studio) classes are really the best way to get a really good back tuck. It maybe kinda slow, and expensive but if you can afford it, it will work wonders for your flips. I took 5 years of tumbling and am by far the best flipper in my tricking group.
