I'm starting to wonder if genetics are indeed are part in flexibility. As ive got a line of relatives who have a history of really bad hamstring flexibility so Im doubting that I will ever be able to have decent flex. Is there anywhere that can enlighten me on this issue?

Try stretching, I heard if done enough, you can become very flexible

this is plausible although highly unlikly...
try this....stretch a split as far as u can and have someone come frm behind and push u the rest of the way down....itll hurt for a while but youll be more flexible

I like to jump off my roof, with my legs spread as far as I can.

Genes are not the only thing relatives share, they also share lifestyle habits, and people tend to mirror each other's mannerisms, inactivity, diet, emotional tendencies and posture and stuff. Pretty much EVERYONE has bad hamstring flexibility if they don't train it anyway, it's just something about our stiff society.
Stretching the hamstrings involves sticking your ass out, this is something people are ashamed to do, which is why many can't do it well. People prefer to stretch their lower backs instead, since then their spinal discs stick out instead, that's less embarassing.
