height on moves like aerials and btwist comes from forcefully lifting up the back leg...u can have a huge vertical but u cant get height on an aerial unless u lift ur leg up high.....having some dynamic flexibility also helps :)

I believe it also has something to do with "explosiveness", and also being a calf jumper and a quad jumper.

It helps to kick hard but is not always necessary.....having some dynamic flexibility also helps :)
Fixed.
I don't kiick hard with my back leg... But it works

This may be why... I am calf jumper.

My best friend freshman year in high school was a senior. He had an insane vert (40+ inches!!!). I have personally witnessed him two hand 360 dunk and dunk from the free throw line. He was 5'11"!
Now this person is also the man who got me into tricking (for that I can never thank him enough). I remember, he could do all the the basic tricks but they were always super low and fugly (excluding his cheat gainer, he kicked a hole in the school hallway cealing during one of our school sessions).
The morale of the story - technique prevails every time.

Something I noticed while watching my own footage recently (I'm currently injured so I have nothing else to do) was that I don't fully extend my legs when jumping up during, say, a backflip. Essentially I leave the ground before having utilised my potential jumping power to its fullest extent, all the way down to the toes. You want to fully straighten your leg during the jump - do the jump & reach test, then apply exactly the same jumping technique for backflips.
If you can dunk a basketball it's probably a question of technique rather than strength. Watch some of your backflips in slow motion to find out whether you have the same problem as me and let me know if this helps as I won't be able to find out for myself for another couple of weeks

Yep, tricking is easier for calf jumpers. Some things that will make you better at calf jumping is, jump rope, sprints, plyometrics, and etc. When you trick consciously use your calf muscles 'till you don't have to think about it anymore. I myself am a quad jumper and I'm working on my calves so I can get more height. Watch the last blog Jeremy's did on Christmas I believe and he talks about "height" there to.

I am 5'11" with 38 inch vert... Close. I must gain more height. Squattage time. Squattage cheese.

Shit man, that is nice. How much has your vert improved since you started lifting?
I remember that my friend had a higher vert than the average NBA player (which is like 43" or something). It was almost funny because he did not work out and had the worst diet I have ever witnessed. I remember seeing his little brother (who was in middle school) trying to dunk. He probably could have gotten it but he had to use two hands because he could not palm the ball.
Fucking genetics

do this.
All tricks (well, all well preformed tricks anyways) use your entire body. Arms, legs, core, head, are all super important, learn to use them together or your tricking will suffer greatly. You should check this video out as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTE7KFmUGkg. Its a gainer tutorial, but he talks about something called "The Maximum Peak and Power Principle," learn it and apply it and your height will improve. Post videos if you want help on specific tricks.

That is about what I was at pre-injury.
34" is a good vertical so stop whining, bitches :P And there's no way in hell the NBA average is 43", everyone would be dunking like Vince Carter then.

I live in Harrisburg. Your quality of a person is based on your vert.

technique and body fitness go hand in hand imo. you need at least a little bit of both in order to succeed in whatever youre trying to perform. they ma compensate for eachother sometimes but theres no way that a grandma who has horrible joints and super weak muscles but with perfect technique can perform a backflip. and there is no way someone with brute force and flexibilty but no technique can perform a sanpuswipe<- see how i did that:)

My grandma could probably backflip, her abs would hurt afterwords, but I am sure she could do it.
Proper technique is like a door to "unleash" your true power. The more open the door is the more potential you have.

I am not disagreeing. If you open the door and there is nothing there then, well, you suck and are not conditioned enough to trick.
However, videos of 300lb cheerleaders (male) doing backflips only proves that technique is the key.

lol. what a pointless argument. bottom line to thread creator- you have the power, now just combine it with technique to make captain planet. :)
