View Full Version : New article for newbies (in it I talk about fear)

I wrote an article about starting tricking for beginners. http://www.trickstutorials.com/index.php?page=content/start This is kind of like my version of the article Kevin wrote 5 years ago.
Things that would interest non-beginners:
How to handle self-consciousness while training in public. Since I've been training alone for the past 6 years, I know a thing or two about keeping your head straight when going to parks by yourself and having people you don't want around watching you trick.
How to handle fear. I considered writing a whole article about it... But instead just threw it in here. I think these three things are the only things you will really need for handling fear (if you actually do them.)
please give feedback, experiences, etc as usual.

Another one well done. A good topic too since it's so common to see such questions.

Juji is being generous with articles! Great start for TT in 2009 already
I like how you described your feelings towards the fun of tricking. ''Being one with the universe'' haha :good: Nice read, perfect advice for beginners yes.

haha yes! Loved the article I also knew the feeling of training alone in a park or sth. But I can do some solid tricks now and fuck off of people running around. But dogs are annoying. I barely kicked one while doing a gainerflash :/
Good man!! I love when you write new stuff, I'm going to read that
Edit : Great stuff! as use!!

What a great graph!
I experienced exactly the problem you see in the second graph where there is relatively less fun to find in tricking when you just started it.
When I started, I had about 1 year of lifting experience and no experience in martial arts/whatsoever. So things like kicks and twisting just beat the ell out of me. This is like 2 years ago and through this time I have been on and off tricking, because I never developed above a few tricks which were backhandsprings, backflip, aerial, 540, 360, bkick. frontflip and thats actually it. I had no idea of combos etc and no friends to trick with, which was the most difficult part. It just wasnt fun enough going out alone just drilling some basics and not being able to learn some more things. I had no camera to film myself so I had no idea what I was doing. Since I have a camera and a place where some more trickers gather I nearly learn every session a new move and it is much much more fun!
So excellent idea to tell beginners not to stop or get depressed quickly. Once you have broke the line of the basics, it really just gets better!
I also made my experiences of being out in a park alone and not really being confident enough to just do what you are there to do. And being perfectly warmed up helped me excessively on that! It just makes you care less what happens out of your little territory and you are mentally much more focussed on your sport.
Also a great tip!
Thanks for the article, although it would have been great to have read that a few years ago:tea:

Gettin some serious work done these days, eh Juji?
Wow!.. nice article.. always when you write something new it's a great event.. because there are more things that could help people in tricking, or simply is fine to see that you still give importance and feedback to the site,it's a counteraction to thinking that you have something better to do than spend your time here(the biggest fear of all members I think) ...
the article was excellent and i loved your graph and it is very true.
the only thing i have to pick at in the article is taht the WoW expansion has allowed paladins to level all the way to 80 now.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, I'm happy you are enjoying tricking now!

It would be a waste if I didn't share this stuff!

Hopefully this will end alot of the fear threads, since most noobs will ask for help on fear but still not listen to the advice returned. Maybe hearing it straight from you could help alot for them. I also sense that this will be the first thing posted in a fear thread.
I personally pike the "people watching you" section, cuz at my park that's fairly common... (I only go to that park once every few months because of that). This could change!

Ah Brandon, I forgot one in that section. About the "people watching you" thing. If you begin visiting one place regularly, you'll get really comfortable. So everyone else will seem like strangers as opposed to you feeling out of place or being "watched". Instead you'll be the "watcher"... Kind of thing. Find a field and go there like 3 times a week and after a week you'll know what I mean.

Of course now it's too dark, cold, wet, dead outside to really trick anyway. :ogre:

juji, you know i would not be surprised if there are people on this website watching you.ahahahahha.
Fresh, short and understandable. Good job juji!
Love this article, perfect for begineers. Just short enough so they would read the whole article.
A+
I have a naked guy that watches me trick at my local park so i tend to avoid that park and trick at the dog exercise park instead, just gotta watch the old stagnant grogan.
You should add something about friends, even having friends that don't trick is a good motivation to get rid of fear.
"Do a backflip you fuckin pussy"
"If you don't try a flip now, i am going home"
This is how i learnt the basic flips haha.
Plus you can do other things with friends like play tiddlywinks or get stoned. :good:

And that graph is sooo true, but in my case tricking graph increases exponentially :-)

As always I am forever grateful for your generosity. The stuff you write is always awesome. I think I will take the temporary letting go of fear inducing tricks to heart, thank you.
BTW you used "Pick a favorite place" two times in the "I'm self-conscious about training alone in public! Help!" section.

Thanks good advice, I was just struggling with the people watching thing because I picked a new place to practice the other day and while it was a good open space by a pond lots of people kept going by and staring. You are right about the "once you are warmed up" comment too.

i feel that article would be really too subjective. so many people are like grow some balls and chuck it while others need more practice wit someone there. i feel this is an article wit too many variables in which mental state people are in via tricks.

as something i'm struggling with right now i think a more in-depth "fear article" would be really helpful. when people are like "grow some balls" it really does nothing but pressure me into fail haha.
with the right feedback someone could totally make a good article covering all different aspects of fear.

The secret to getting over fear is not caring if you get hurt.
I'm with frankinstine.
If someone posted tutorials on the main page about break falling, there'd be a lot less fear on this website. Once you practice enough, you know you wont get hurt. And since there's a break fall for every direction and almost ever circumstance, that almost zeros out the fear of moves. Except the backflip. lol

The secret to getting over fear is not caring if you get hurt.
yeah i've been focusing on forward tricks as i've no problem with them, (fear-wise). i'm gonna try gain a hell of a lot more air awareness and hopefully grow dem balls.
Well, it just helps. When you can guarantee safety, you'll be safe. Sure, you can lie to yourself to get over it and end up fine, but some of us (like me) can't do that. I can't trick myself out of fear. (pun not intended)
I used to have massive fears about everything but after I got the balls to do double full and attempt double btwist I suddenly have no fear and progressed so much in a short time
I still have fear of swing throughs tho but the sooner you throw it the easier it'll get to concentrate without fear
Plus you'll be a much happier person with no fear
