yeah...
i wanted to know how to work on the muscle directly under your pec, that muscle group on the lower part of your rib cage.
Id prefer body weight excercises cause i dont have that much time anymore since school is in my way

no commitment but results are expected, how typical.

What? There's your pecs and your abs. Nothing else there.

You're talking about serratus anterior aren't you? This muscle protracts the shoulder blade (moves it forward and out on the ribcage). Its a pretty cool muscle. I've heard some woodchopping motions can work it, but bench press can also work it. When at lockout protract the shoulder blade (push them forward) and that should work the serratus anterior more. Do that on it's own or incorporate into your normal bench pressing. It might help if your lower back isnt terribly arched whilst doing them.

This one, i'm pretty sure.
And oh yes body weight, jeeze, do the same in a push-up I guess, or do that in a planche!

I would be very careful working protractions as a movement in their own right. There are a few variations (ExRx recommends some, for example) that are performed in a bench press or incline press position. When I was younger and stupid, I injured my shoulder twice foolishly trying to work the serratus anterior directly with these. The shoulder can "give out" in that position, especially if you try to do these movements with heavier loads, and cause some pretty bad consequences. Use bodyweight via scapular push-ups if you need to work the area directly (e.g. you have a destabilized or winged scapula) or turn to other exercises, such as chest passes with medicine balls, clap or depth push-ups, and heavy push presses and jerks to train other attributes, while also benefiting this muscle.

Oh thank you, I thought I was going to have to come in here and call some people dumbasses. And I still do. To everyone before this post: you dumbasses.

And yes as chicanerous said, don't do any more weight than you would do a typical bench press with if you're thrusting your scapulae, or you increase your chances of dislocating your shoulders obviously.

Does protraction put the rotator cuff at a weakened position?

Ah righty.
Concurrently for each of the anteriorly directed loads, there was increased in situ strain of the anterior band of the inferior glenohumeral ligament with increased simulated scapular protraction. These results suggest that repetitive or chronic protraction of the scapula may result in excessive strain and, ultimately, insufficiency in the anterior band of the inferior glenohumeral ligament.

I am pretty lost as to what this muscle does.

So, I guess what I am asking is: what does it do, and how does it effect tricks + everyday life?

Flairs and stabilizes your shoulder blades.

no im not talking about the serratus interior, im talking about the muscle group directly in front of them (serratus exterior maybe?)

Yes. Pullovers kick ass for a whole bunch of other muscles, too. I love these.

Exterior is the opposite of interior.
