Can anyone recommend a regime to follow to achieve split, or just some stretches that have helped you.

I'm not sure if this is true but I think I read somewhere that there is a correlation between muscle mass and flexibility...I have big legs...and not very much flexibility ha I was wondering if this would also slow down my progress by much?

So far I'm doing side/front/back leg lifts around 10 reps followed by some side and front static stretches, also every other day or every three days doing some PNF on my sides.
I've been doing this since around....23rd december? maybe before.

Basically I just really want to have flexibility better than I have no, and I know that it takes time and that people might just say I'm being impatient but I just want to know what worked for you really?

Thanks guys - Boz

Well having big legs will obviously make it harder to lift it. So, yes there is a correlation between leg mass and dynamic/static active flexibility. I'm not saying that leg mass has an important impact on flexibility either. My legs are big because of all the squatting and deadlifting, but I can almost do a vertical sidelift.

I started trying to get the splits at the start of December and have got alot closer to it, i suspect another month of stretching and I'll get it. I do them every day isometrics every second day, with the warm-up before stretching being a workout of squats and leg raises. It seems to be going good and the warm-up makes a big difference. It will 2 months or maybe more depending on your flexibility when going for them seriously to get splits, so set yourself a goal for 2 months from now to get the splits.
Also, i have only been trying to get splits, and the splits is my only stretch for them, i found I can make the stretch way more intense this way, instead of doing specific hamstring and hip flexor stretches. Be patient and you'll get them.

I spose but training squats while training your flexibility will keep your flexibility high. But yes I understand what your saying

Ahh thanks alot, a timeframe was all I really wanted I guess something good to aim for. Yeah I tend to do light stretches for warm up then go into real training, I might need to do a real warm up I spose I'm only cheating myself really haha.
Thanks man

Peon has a point about leg weight affecting active (static or dynamic) flexibility but it shouldn't affect passive (static) flexibility as much since you're not lifting the leg (although that should easily be compensatable for with strength development). Legs are part of your overall weight, and weighing more means your legs need to be stronger to hold you up and be able to relax better as you deepen a stretch, so that might be where it comes from, but there's nothing stopping that strength from developing.

I more meant that my legs are big as in..muscle big, not as in I have fat legs haha.
I can easily hold my side kick and front kick at full stretch out for time...its just its not as high as it could/I want it to be.
