i dont know about everyone elses gymnast coaches but iv had just about enough of mine, so i'll do the only thing i can...start a topic on TT moaning about them.

all i get is "we dont do free style this" and "stop your free jumping street style chicken sandwhich flips"

like..
obviously i know they're mistaking me for a free runner and i dont expect them to know the difference but they have no respect for us and our sport they dont take any interest even though we stay out of their way the equipment and their little gymnasts .... just UGH i want my own dojo

what does everyone else think?

He's right though, complaining on here will not do anything to change their attitude. Maybe you could change their attitude towards freestyle flips by talking to them, showing them some videos of the guys who are pros who obviously possess talent and skill level comparable to that of gymnasts, and that they work equally hard if not harder in some cases.

If they still choose to be close minded, then screw them and keep training your tricks hard.

One of the coaches at my gym was stuck up like that, thinking Gymnastics was the end-all to everything. He always gave me dirty looks when I did something with my own style instead of form, or if I threw kicks or whatnot. However, I once helped out a couple of his team guys with their Standing Fulls and he shut up after that.

Let your actions speak for themselves.

No problem. So just go and train what you want, and then tell the coaches to suck it when in time they come back to you asking you to teach their team kids a "weird trick" or two to spice up their routines. It's happened to me. However I ended up showing them a b-twist because 1.) the coach was awesome 2.) the girl was ffffiiinnneeee. It's now her favorite trick.

well I train as much as i can in my gym.....and our gym isnt the biggest or best gym to train in, but its a plyo and fun and a feel good envirornment :D anywayssss i got lucky with the coaches,, the Guy who owns the gym loves tricking and thinks of it as unique and really interesting to watch....he pushes me to go further haha, he also sees my self trained and natural talent at som fulls and tucks and stuff and he likes me training his students and helping around the gym....ive got a family paying somtime soon i hope, for me to teach there son a few things in some private paid lessons :D .....All in all its luck of the draw who is watcing you train at the gyms :D a cocky asshole o cool people

Because they don't understand it. It's up to you to fix that. If you can do a btwist, they'll recognize it as a Tong Fei, which is a move in the FIG Code of Points. Start there and work up. Show them how you can connect the skill to a full twisting gainer (cork).

Or maybe your tricks aren't good enough to impress them.

I think for as many friendly gymnasts as we have met some still frown behind our backs, at the way we twist or take off. There is rarely a kick they think is cool and when we say full it just ignites flames in them you can tell..

Jake, suck my fucking cock you mother cunt, you asked for opinions and I gave you my view, which simply was : Bitching and moaning about this is pointless and solves nothing..What did you expect, for us to all take offence that a GYMANST or 2 thought tricks were not cool. We're not a personal army for you.

Also, not to sound offensive but I think David may be right. Not that your tricks are ugly but you must be new because to be honest its only the new people that take personal offence to gymnasts. I've gotten over it and so do many people. Sometimes someone may get offensive towards you cuz you trick but really its not a gymnast doggin' ya its a person. Not all gymnasts hate. Just regular people. I've had drive by yellings of people calling me and my friend faggot cuz we were tricking. So w.e bro swallow your pride your in like one of THE newest underground-est sports out there. There is bound to be haters.

haha guess I did'nt.....it just seemed this thread was heading towards fail so I just replyed to the O.P...
but I really have never been in a gym so I was just giving my opinion on what I thought was best, from what the original post said :ogre:

anybody else notice how stuck-up most gymnasts (atleast the ones ive met) tend to be?..
I was talking to this one girl in my class today who like an elite gymnast or something and had sprained her toe on a BHS (lol)....
I started asking her if she messed up the landing or if she was trying a tumble sequence and she goes on a rant about how I probably didnt even know what a BHS was and how I shouldnt be talking about gymnastics if I wasnt one...
even on alot of youtube vids, such as anis's full-in-x out-full out theres gymnasts who come in to comment and the first thing they write is "I'm an elite level 10 gymnast" and then complain about how his roundoff was tilted...
idk about ppl in general but If I was a gymnast I'd try to maybe give some constructive critiscism to someone who has obviously acheived alot without formal training...
its like if I see a gymnast doing a p720 triple and complain about how her second kick was'nt spotted...

Ugh I go to a sterotypical gym with competition gymnasts. I just got lucky enough and went during the adult rec classes on thursdays. The coach there is about 3-5 years my senior and isn't a prick. He lets me do whatever I want pretty much. Under the stipulation that if I feel uncomfortable with a move to call him and he'll spot it and if he does not know what it is he'll ask me to explain it and he'll help me devise a plan to train it in a safer way if a spot is unrealistic in that situation.
IN the same gym when I started going. They had nothing for guys or anything or any teen rec or anything so they let me train during the ladies rec...the ladies were in there late 20s and early 30s so not the spot to pick up. The coach Janet was a nice girl about 24 or so but she really was never comfortable with me practicing " Unconventional Gymnastics" as she put it. Mainly because she did not understand. So she asked me to refrain from kicking and attempting sloppy twists and what not so I trained backflips but yeah. Over all I have never had an overly pig headed coach. I also live in Canada and Gymnastics isn't the end all be all. Since your from england well england and europe is big on gymnastics in general I mean in some schools it's part of the gym curriculum so you'd come up against far more scrutiny

does that have any relevance at all? its not if you go to a gym that defines you as a gymnast, but what kind of tricks you throw.

i notice a lot of gymnast turned trickers only do gainers and corks and never do any kicks. i also saw you tumble quite a bit. so i drew some possible conclusions.

Yeah it does, Gymnasts don't Tumble/Flip off there beloved pylo/spring floor!
I kick in my flips! So i recently have been training some corks and posted them *shrugs* big deal! I do alot of B-twists and S/t's these days you don't get gymnasts doing that. Every time i go tricking i throw 540s / c7's. My transitions are usually feilongs or hook/wheel kicks!

EDIT:
I hardly ever tumble! ill kick when i want to kick and ill flip when i want to flip!

What tricks you do doesn't define a tricker or gymnast its the motivation and passion behind the individual! Its also the difference of self training to being coached!

Its the freedom of putting my arms and legs where the fuck i want compared to having to run in the universal same standard that all gymnasts do! Yes it works and in the best way... But i rather see individual styles and methods of adaption that works for them.

I don't know if i should originally take your first post as a compliment meaning my tumbling is on a clean level or if you just wanted to insult me!

I don't blame the coaches, neccisarily. It's probably do to with the high level of competition in gymnastics, combined with the high standards of many judges that places a pressure on gymnasts and their coaches to perform to a preset level of uniformity.

If you had been tricking in an environment like that for many years I'm sure you'd lose empathy for style/ "imperfection" and develop some level of elitism.
You'd lose understanding of the beauty of flaw!

Plus, sub-professional gymnast coaches all have huge bellys and short legs, so they can't throw kicks for shit.

one thing i've just got to comment on is this idea that some maybe new trickers have, that tricking is superior to gymnastics because we kick and because we can do triples too blah blah. Different sports man, gymnastics is not only tumbling. Just be respectful when using the gym, and show them how varied and excited tricking can be. If they're still not showing you any respect, it's not the right place for you.

Final post in this thread,

Just want to apologize to anyone if i offended you, and your right i don't know shit about gymnastics nor have i ever done it. Unfortunately all my encounters with gymnasts haven't been so friendly and especially gymnast coaches have offended my tricking and just acted so arrogant and patronizing!

I have a belief that its not what tricks you do that makes you a tricker its the motion and drive in the individuals mind that makes them what they want to be.

what's with the random lashing out at people, David? why are you using gymnast as a derogatory term?

in my experience, from what i've learned a lot of gymnasts turned trickers primarily go for gainers and corks and stay true to their tumbling roots, while avoiding kicks. ofcourse this isnt true for all gymnasts that turn trickers. as i see a lot of them actually do kicks and stuff (a lot at the team E gym)

i noticed that because carney did a lot of gainers and corks, and a lot of tumble passes i assumed "hey, he must be a gymnast attempting to trick". plus he's australian so i also thought that maybe he was another one of team e's students. since a lot of the students WERE gymnasts at one point.

so he bashed them and i thought, well if why do you hate em so much, you do a fair amount of gymnastics tumbling yourself , why be a hypocrite?

but according to him, gymnasts only do gymnastics at a gym and if you are outside, even doing gymnastics, you arent a gymnast. lewlz.
