View Full Version : Need tips on my frontflip

Ok guys I got my fronflip yesterday but I can land it only in a crouched position.
I guess that my biggest problem before the last session was that I didn't block at all, so I was literally getting no height. Now I'm going more upwards but it seems that it isn't still enough to land it straight (I'm not landing on my ass anymore though ).
There is the video: http://www.vimeo.com/3499063.

Remember that they are two different fronflips filmed from two different positions (I know that the angles are awkward but damn, that room is small!)

Please don't post any tutorial anymore, I think I've watched almost all of them

First off, your head...it looks like your diving more than flipping. Head up, looking forward as long as possible, jump/punch off ground, reach more, and tuck HARD! You'll get more height and land easier that way! I used to do my front flips how your doing!!

GOod job though! =)

FRANKINSTINE, WHERE ARE YOU!!!

Just don't do that and you'll be fine!

Good job on getting the flip. You have got it mostly right just throw everything upwards more. Now one thing you must remember is to generate your rotation by throwing your hips upwards over your head and not throwing your head down below your hips. You should throw your arms from behind your head UP and feel your toes push off before you are upside down. A really good drill that helped me loads was putting something in front of me that I had to frontflip over. It doesn't have to be too high, it just has to be high enough so that it forces you to go up. Also don't put anything really wide in front of you or else you will just be diving over it.

it sounds like your executing the flip before you jump. think about jumping through i hoop that is way above head level. also, if you come out of your rotation too early then you will fall on your ass. stay tight, and spin fast.:)

along with everyone elses suggestions, u should jump up! u should land roughly a foot or 2 forward from where u jumped to get more height rather than distance...ur practically jumping further than the mats! another thing is that ur not fully tucking...meaning ur hands arent grabbing on to ur knees! 2 things that will help ur rotation even more is that wen u swing ur arms down, grab ur knees and pull them down also! and once u left the ground, try to look between ur legs...this will force ur abs to crunch which many ppl dont use to flip!

if u do all these...ull spin very fast! just remember to untuck or u mite over rotate lol

Thanks for the excellent replies guys.

So I should do three major things:

1) Do not throw my head down that way.
2) Reach up with my arms up to get more height.
3) Tuck really tight to create more spinning power.

Am I wrong?

Another question: what do I need to do if I wanna do it from standing?
Is it the same thing?

Yep. That's exactly what you have to do =]

For standing... i really can't help you since i'm terrible at standing front flips.

Standing is exactly the same except you dont have a blocking motion to help you get up. You just have to push so damn hard and long with your legs all the way down to your toes.

In other words I need a good vertical to do it, right?
That means that it will pass some time before I'll be capable of landing one

I couldn't understand how he broke it too

It will help with the height if you block by trying to get your legs further in front when away to take off also don't throw the flip down go up with it.

Four quick steps. =]

1. Get a decent run up
2. Punch the ground hard
3. Tuck real tight
4. Spot/Guess your landing and done

GOOD LUCK

dont flip onto objects because you wont land as well. when u block, try and transfer the forward momentum to vertical momentum more which will obv give u more height. TUCK! swing you arms up a bit more and tuck fast. dont dive. :)

His leg broke because he didnt jump up and still had like all his forward momentum, and when he landed his legs couldnt go forward anymore because his feet were on the ground stopping them, and the pressure on that part of his bone aswell wouldve forced it to snap. He may of had his foot turned to his right aswell, but I couldnt tell. I guess he has weak bones?
