View Full Version : Back handsprings.. Okay, seriously..

Ok, so, ever since I started trying backflips, I never understood the whip-back motion.. I don't understand how people do it by MISTAKE, when I'm trying my hardest to even get close.. At the moment, I think a cork is easier than a BHS, so obviously something is very wrong.
I don't get it! I try throw my head back, and I just end up doing a really fast layout onto my hands..
I've been doing back tucks for years, so I've probably gotten into the habit of trying to keep my back straight and jumping up, instead of, you know, the complete opposite..
I thought maybe I should start trying walkovers, but I can't get anywhere near enough to the ground, and I seriously doubt you need to be able to do a walkover to do a back handspring, but whatever..
Anyone have any ideas on how I can get the feel for the motion? I'm just not getting it no matter what.. I've tried paying attention to things like, arms going back before your head, legs staying straight and whatever little tips and tid bits that I've seen around..
I've been trying this move since like 2007, seriously, enough's enough.. How the fuck do I do it?
do the same thing you do...but slower...

hmm iv done what your talking about, just gotta make it smoother, nice extended jump back onto your hands, not all crazy whipped over, just gotta know where the ground is
dont jump up jump back
the dig in a bhs is totally different than a backtuck. so alter the way you dig before the jump and it will change which direction you jump in.
in a backtuck you just basically lightly dig by bending at the knees and jumping straight up [or as much as possible].
for bhs you want to dig like so;
bend your knees like you are sitting in an invisible chair, while bringing your arms down to your side.
now if you are doing the first step right your weight will be shifting backwards and you have two options. 1. fall backwards onto your ass 2. spring / jump backwards into the bhs.
go for option 2. ha. once you feel yourself to start to fall off balance [backwards] throw your arms over your head and jump onto them.
another thing that will help is practicing long, extended handstands because that is the position you will assume the moment you leave the ground. if you can hold that position you will have a long and straight bhs.
don't throw your head back, follow your arms
don't throw your head back, follow your arms
I dont agree with that. You need to follow your arms, obviously but not looking back can result in a crash if youre not used to bhs. This, however,is just my opinion.
throw your head back with your arms but keep your arms outstretched and lean back until you can't then jump back onto your hands.

yes of course you need to look back, but often times in noobs this will result in throwing the head before the arms.
the head and arms need to stay in one straight line after the arms pass the head
the advice i usually give is to look for the ground through your hands, basically look in between the thumbs the whole time. this makes for proper positioning

HAY GUIZ'Z..
I woke up this morning, checked this thread.. And then ran outside in my MONKEY pajama pants and a hoody.. I chucked a back tuck and then went for a bhs.. Thoughts? : FgrPBKGmacg

Jon thanks for the detailed well set out post, it helped a lot :D.
dude those aren't bad, drilling will make them better
try to keep your arms by your ears, and don't put your arms down when you snap, keep them up

They're literally the best ones I've ever done, it usually looks like a backflip onto my hands..
looked good man!
just try and assume that handstand position i mentioned earlier to get your body and legs to straighten out.
keep at it and it will get better and better!
try doing bhs - btuck for fun.
plus the more comfortable you are with backwards tumbling the better it will get.

that was not bad at all man. straighten those arms, keeps them up by your ears during the bhs. think of hitting a perfect handstand in the middle of it. also, work on shoulder and back flexibility!! do bridges and stuff like that, and focus on your upper back and shoulders. bhs is a hard trick to make right, but when your technique is good you will gain RIDICULOUS power.
