Work on your flexibility a little more. Some other things I noticed were your leaving your hands kind of by your sides when you jump. Raise them up, rip em' up HIGH. Also dig down a little when you jump and raise that non kicking leg up right to your chest.
Also, point your toes and try and trick barefoot. It'll feel a lot more, weightless.
drill your standing round/crescent kick until it gets a nice snap to it...work your set up some more.... and like HaoTwo said, use your arms to get you up...but once there up put them in guard
also, this move takes lots and lots of drilling...so good luck...and it should just turn into a 540 sometime....that's what happened to mine (just remember to put power in the kick, like your trying to kill your target)

Keep your arms up, and just drill the fuck through it.

Do some videos of you doing some inside crescents instead of tornados. I want to see how those look. Or actually just practice crescents and other kicks, get some dynamic flexibility. When you can perform an inside crescent properly start doing tornados...

remember sync your shoulders and your hips the kick should come out way cleaner, and you will know when your ready for the 540 when your tornado is high (at least chest or above) and the kick is speedy.
Remember tornado kick is a ROUND kick.

drill, drill, drill, drill
and of course remember to use your arms like everyone else said
and drill :good:
as for turning it into a 540, don't think about it just happening one day. You need to force yourself to land on the leg at first, and it will slowly become natural

Work on your flexibility
how do I go about getting better flexibility? just stretching a lot?

idk IMO theres two types of 540's....
theres those where you can tell the person drilled to land on the kicking leg...
and the types where theres so much power in the kick it literally pulls all the way through...
I did 540 on accident when I was drilling tornados so I land facing the target again and on one attempt I didnt have time to stick my non kicking leg down..
no disrespect though

No disrespect taken.
There is but one type of 540, which is a hyper tornado. Drilling to land on the kicking leg is the best way to start. Doing a 540 on accident takes far longer than forcing yourself to land on the leg. I landed my 540 on my first try, I have it on film, I just forced the landing.
the kick you describe with all of the power that pulls all of the way through comes with drilling and practice

read Juji's article, you want both dynamic and static flexibility

Its on the home page bro, under flexibility. http://www.trickstutorials.com/
And throwing out my two cents. Trick bare foot (duh) and do a round kick inside of an inside crescent. Tornado kicks are viable with both inside crescents and round kicks and can look good either way. 540 is possible with either kick as well, but its many times easier with a round kick and will also be tremendously more powerful and crowd appealing. If I want to do a tornado with a round kick, I actually have to recoil my kick in early or else I will 540.

I didn't read any of the other suggestions here but I'll say what I gotta.
THROW THEM ARMS UPPPPP! Then bring your arms back to your chest. Don't let those arms flail all over.
Work the flexibility. The best way to do that is drill your inside crescent kicks or spinning round kicks. Also just drilling tornados will help with the flexibility a ton as well.
I don't know if you have any martial arts training, if not I think juji has some kicking tutorials. If not message me and I'll make a vid for you explaining the two kicks and how to drill them.
good luck!:juji:
