I rip through large amounts of calories every day and have an extremely hard time gaining weight. A personal trainer put me on a 5000 kcal a day diet for the whole summer and I only gained like 2 pounds. I'm a competitive swimmer. I weightlift every day, and have two swim practices each day. Each last about 2.5 hours long.

I weigh 135 lbs, I'm 5 foot 8.5 inches, and I have about 3-5% body fat.

I wanna gain maybe 10 or so pounds and maintain a healthy body fat. Anyone have any ideas?

I'll post what I eat and drink every day if you guys need me to.

Just have to eat more or exercise less, the former probably the more realistic choice if you're competing. Sometimes 5000kcals just isn't enough.

Ah man. My life is going to be pretty fun then. During that summer I had to stay up pretty late each night just to get all the required food down. Haha. :]

I don't see how really, you're not going to be able to eat all clean food with that high of an intake so getting in your calories should be fairly simple.

No way can you eat 5000 kcals a day and only be 135 lbs.

Search for calorie rich, non-filling foods and it'll be easy as pie

I swim for 5 hours every day. And I'm collegic level more or less. 2.5 hours of sprinting and trying as hard as I can in one of the most physically demanding sports there is...burns a lot of calories. Haha. And then I weightlift after. :dead:

You'd be a bit dead if your bf was 3-5%.

If you're swimming 5 hours a day, you need a SHIT ton of calories. Keep eating until you gain. Gorge yourself on pizza, pies, cheese, milk, etc.

haha please god tell me you're not wondering why you're not putting on weight if you're swimming that much.

Thats not a high metabolism, thats just ALOT of exercise.

Well, if you swim everyday AND lift everyday, why dont you try to lift 3 days a week and eat shitloads of food?

5 hours of swim training plus weights is a lot of exercise as people have said, up it to 6 or 7 thousand a day and see what happens, try adding whole milk/protein powder/nut butter/oil to blended shakes and you can easily get a large amount of extra kcals.

Ok guys. Here's what I'm doing. I've brought to school with me today a large heavy bag of GOOD food. I'll be eating a bit every 10-15 minutes throughout the day. Haha

Lol, I'm carring a bag, complete with a full quart of milk, gallon of water, a bag of dry oatmeal, smoothies in water bottles, 2 bananas, 2 apples, 3 bags of protein powder, a protein shake, and 3 baked home-made apple turnovers. WOO.

Hey cromos .. I swim too .. It's the most distructive sport, if done agonistically .. every training ,you almost spit your soul out of your body ... ;) .. this is only my third year of agonistically swim .. (i'm not pro, and I'l never be )my times are :
- 50 m freestyle : 0:28"
-100 m freestyle 1':03"

what are yours?? I'm curios.. I think you make something like 0:24" in 50 m freestyle ... I'm right?

Peanut butter has about 100kcal a tablespoon. I use this when I need some quick calories. Then again, as a FFB I rarely need extra calories.

Im not telling you to eat 50 tablespoons of peanut butter, but try to look for calorie dense foods that are easy to eat.

If I were you I'd up my carb intake hugely if you're that active, and carry round some peanut butter covered pancakes in a lunch box haha.

If you're on 5000 a day now, add in another 1500 with carbs. This will be easy as nuts to get in from peanut butter and pancakes.

If you want extra Kcal, eats nuts, like pecan or pistachios, or walnuts.
Great for calories. I found that a pack of walnuts containing about 4-500grams is 2850Kcals/100g

Chromos
Apr-03-09, 02:06 PM
Ok, so I need to eat nuts. Question is, should they be salted or unsalted? :o

Tocowujo
Apr-03-09, 06:17 PM
If you're going to be ingesting massive amounts of them i'd stick with unsalted. I don't normally bother with sodium levels myself, but then again i can't imagine trying to maintain a 7000kcal diet

Do you have to weight lift every day? If not, then cutting back may be a good idea.

paulSA
Apr-04-09, 04:48 AM
Up your good fats and as mentioned before carbs...

50 flaxseed oil a day = 450cal
1 cup of saltanas = 390 cal
100g cashew nuts raw = 586 cal
175g pack of flavoured pretzels = 650 cal

these are pretty much averages but they should be similar in calories everywhere.

total for these 4 foods would be around 2000 calories extra for your daily intake. Drink shit loads of water. good luck
