View Full Version : How do you visualize your twists?

So how do you visualize your twisting techniques when you do them, from setup to takeoff to when you're in the air? What do you think about doing? Do you just do it? What all helps you spin?
This applies of course to B-Twists, Corkscrew, and even vertical spinning techniques like Pop/Cheat 720s/900s/1080s etc. Woo!

when i first learned to btwist i didnt know how i did it. i just went through the motions and it worked. Sumtin orginally in my head clicked. then somehow i lost the technique for like 2 years and now i actually understand what goes into it. its weird..i do all these steps and drills but i never did when i first learned it. makes me wonder if i was originally a natural twister and just didnt know it.
i think the same way for cheat and pop techniques i jump and turn the first rotation slow and then crank the shit out of it. i watched matt emig for hand positioning...on how to keep them tight...i know theirs diff ways to place the hand but i just found matt to the best for the fact i do forms. I also like to watch anis and teddys vids for hand positioning. Ive always kinda understood how to twist its just about if im up to crashing on certain twists...like i know i could bs 12 if i really pushed it but i hate crashing so i stick to 10's. Same with pop 1080's/1260 i know i could do it if i wasnt afraid of crashing.

i dont really visualize my twists in terms of where stuff is, but i just visualize what it will feel like. it helps me with air awareness which is tastyyyyyy. for example, in corks i think about wrapping my arms hard, turning my head, and thinking about how long i need to stay tight before landing.
for kicking its harder to do this. for me it helps to spot where i am in the air. its much harder for me to just know where i am when its a vertical spin.

i think i focus on everything but the twist. the wushu thingy is really important for me, i focus on the twist the least.

Mental Rehearsal has come into play a few times, I will visualize it from a 3rd person view like a camera would film it and also in like a weird view as if it is through my eyes but also outside of body its weird!
I also take a deep breathe to clear my irrational thoughts and unimportant impulses and just go for the twist/trick without a thought just an objective, i really just let my muscles do it for me, And If i say the word cork or yell it my body knows physically what to do!

Pitlock!
I just imagine to be as fast as pitlock, it works.
If I think about the trick or the wrapping or something to much everything goes wrong.
For spins I just think about setting, thats it. Once I've set my body just wraps automatically. I dont spot unless I'm kicking either, I just...know when to open up haha.

I'm useless and don't see anything but blur and don't feel anything but confusion. But I try over and over until I land it then I just do the exact same thing each time.

setup is key i think when i visualize...
kinda off topic but safari's post gave me the idea.
sometimes i try to think of trickers who are good at doing the trick that i want to do, like cork and btwist i think of teddy sometimes and cart-triple i think of scotty :) but mostly i try to think of me being myself and perfect myself instead of trying to copy other ppl
I jump, I turn, I hold, I open up, I land.

this. I have no idea where I am in the air, I suppose my brain just tells me to open up and land/ kick when it has calculated that I have spun by 360° or whatever.

Argh, my mental prepartion for anything never ever ever turns out how it should. Especially for b twists, like any move I can do I've learned without too much difficulty, and I can b twist but it still fucks me over plenty of times, it just feels so ugly and horrible, I hate doing them so much.
I think the only move in my mind that feels the way it does in my mind is back tucks.
I tend to just do the move now, although recently I've been trying to learn double legs as a single move (I can combo them but can't do them by themselves), and I visualized myself as Jujimufu haha. It really helped, as I was running into the set up too I remembered his old tutorial;
"A lot of people think double legs in the legs, those people are fuck heads", so then I just throw my arms up as hard as I could and got way more lift.

When I do twists I just think of wrapping like a bitch if I am trying to improve, but when im doing tricks casually I dont even think about twisting I just do it automatically. On my vertical twists I just think of swinging my arms hard, wrapping as I leave the floor and keeping my ankles as close as I can.

well lets see, with fulls and corks and b-twists , its always a really heavy feel when im in the air, like i flung myself up with such force im just guiding myself back to my feet with a flip and spin, i useally dont even think about wrapping in a single twist , i focus more on just overall power in the set up, and of course blocking, and for pop tricks i like to think of them as if i were doing a gyro with a kick at the end if that makes sense?

I suck at twisting moves, I can do... one? I think? Two on good days :eh:
but for spin kicks like bs1080's I think about ripping my arms up and then bringing them in tight whilst looking over my shoulder.
For butterfly twists I run into the setup and look over my shoulder like mad once I leave the ground

I still can't do proper corks and btwist, but when I do a simple vertical jump with a spin I concentrate on violently turning my shoulders(as if I'm gonna punch but with arms next to the body) and hips( with some help of left leg if I twist right or right when I twist left) and just concentrating on looking at one point while spinning...
Before I started doing this I barely did some spin and a quarter ~_~ Well now I can do 2 spins and a bit and the spinny motion feels so awesome xD (and I only realized how to spin properly about 10 days ago)
As for how I visualize it... I think it goes something like this... "punch while kicking on the same side and looking at that place as if there's a mini- naked girl with a glamorous body and you have to concentrate to see her!"... or something like that.

Up to 2 twists I can feel where I am in the air,
If im going past that its just total mayhem. I always visualise how it looks for someone looking at me when I do a move. that helps me with first getting height and setting good for twists

when i try to get as high as possible, i dont really think too much of the spin itself. just aggressive approach, and push up off the floor with my jumping leg real hard.
but when i try to roundkick or gainer out of them, i keep my jump leg straight throughout the spin, and the trail leg (2nd leg) chambered. slightly chambered if i wanna gainer, deeper chamber if i wanna roundkick.
I run and then I jump and then I spin and then I break any one of an assortment of limbs!

I just set, jump, delay for a bit and then look in the twisting direction
I wrap like I'm squeezing a large voluminous woman.

I visualize every twisting trick as a different/weird setup for an aerial twist/double aerial twist.
